Tank Work

Hey,

I am in toronto-ish. Looking for someone who can clean up my tank. It has a couple pin holes and would need to be resealed. Any thoughts? Should I use JB weld and POR15?

I have a rad shop that has done several for me. $80 to 100 bucks gets them cleaned, soldered then sealed inside with RedKote which to me is the best.

still looking for some help here. project was on hold due to cash flow issues, but now i am good to go.

any advice? should i tackle myself with JB weld and POR 15?

I dont know if its just the way i mixed the jb weld, but when i used it on my pecock bowl...it seemed to get very soft and pliable after being exposed to the gas.

Anybody have the same problem?

i have read good things about JB weld, if you buy the right one. But, i have never worked with it, so i am not sure about mixing.

someone on a different forum mentioned some gas tank and radiator repair stuff from Canadian Tire.

i think i will swing over there and check it out.

I would not risk a cheap fix and to have it done will cost you.

Have you considered buying a tank? Fifty bucks or make an offer...

Por15 will take care of the pin holes and seal the tank. They have a kit that comes with some fiberglass mesh.  After you have cleaned the tank, you can use that to seal the outside of the tank and then line it.  You will want to clean the tank first because you may have more pinholes that the rust is blocking.  Happened to me, I sealed it that way.  Still holding gas a couple years later.

wrong tank, the one i have runs a bit more expensive. it is from the early 70s

thanks for the tips. do you have a link for the kit, or any images of what you did?

This sounds like the route i will take. if, by the fall, it is not up to snuff, i will have it fixed over the winter.

I had to get the HD tank repair kit.  There was some red liner in the tank that was melting all the way through down to the cylinders.  Mind you, I just used it on the tank.  :)

I had to line it a second time and just got the regular kit.  Note that I had about three different sets of instructions from them - two in the kit and one off the site.  Each one just different enough to mess me up the first time.  The problem was that the tank was still a bit damp inside and it did not stick so I had to strip it and do it again.  Hence the blue and black tanks - I jacked up the paint with the stripper the second time.  Just make dang sure that the tank is tottaly tottaly tottaly dry before you line it or you will be doing it a second time.  I waited a week.  All the blow dryer stuff just was not doing it for me.

I do not have any pics and the repair is under the tank.  I really do not want to pull it off.

For a POR 15 HD kit, shipped to my house (no where to purchase in the GTA) i am looking at $80.00. I also hear that it is an extremely messy and toxic process, haha.

there is a place on Martin grove that will reline and repair the pin holes for $150.00. Gas Tank ReNu

i thnk for the extra $70, to have the reassurance of a professional and the convenience of not filling my place with toxic chemical (and then dumo them down the sewer  :'( , i would be better off to get a pro to handle it.

thoughts? Any use this place before?

I used them.  Good place with a one year warranty.  Worth the $70 extra.
