Just an observation
« on: August 10, 2011, 02:25:08 PM »
Had a new roof put on my house Tuesday due to hail damage and of course the crew were all Mexican, possibly undocumented.   The work was good and quick and I have no complaints.  Now my neighbor is having the house re-sided due to the same storm and the crew is speaking Russian.  Are there any Americans working here anymore? ;D

It seems not when it comes to the kind of hard work for low pay and no benefits that many immigrants are willing to do.  And if an immigrant is undocumented/illegal, that's often the only kind of work they can get because they're not required to provide proof that they're either a citizen or here legally.

Im an american and I still do this kind of labor and building. For less than I should and without benefits. But with job security. I blame it on my age, my boss is only a few years older than me and owns the company (130ish apartments and growing) and has never worked for anyone in his life. This with my age allows him to take my co-workers and I for granted. But he'll learn when I leave (and I will be leaving) how important it is to treat your employees well. But then again, maybe hell just hire some mexicans...
