Is this rotor special??
« on: August 10, 2011, 07:06:00 PM »
I have two rotors, one is like most of the ones I have ever seen and the other has a different center hub. Both rotors are the same bolt pattern, offset, diameter, and thickness. The one with the silver hub is the one that is the same, and the black hub is the odd man out. Ideas???
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Maybe I'm not thinking hard enough but is the silver one just media blasted or something?

The one with the black hub has an abrupt step up from the rotor surface and the ribs on the back are totally different. The silver one is like the other rotors I have and does not have that large step.

The rotor in the first picture appears to have the characteristics of a K0 rotor, i.e. the abrupt step you noticed.
Like this one.

Honestly it was in my hand on the way over to the blast cabinet to take the paint off the hub. Thats when my spider sense went off. It will not be getting drilled or modded in any way. Also came up with a unicorn top triple clamp while scrounging in my parts boxes. Not too bad!!

You should tape off the rotor before you blast it. Blue painters tape works fine.

I have actually read that media blasting the rotor surface is an easy way to deglaze them for better stopping. I think I will blast both parts and then paint the center. The early rotor can go to a new home, as I dont want to cut that one up.

yeah, I suppose that would work ok.
I recently repainted the center of my rotor. Masking was a pain but it turned out nice.
