One other thing: At the end of the day, THIS SHOULD BE A LESSON. Any bike, no matter what state or condition, should be insured with any extras listed in the policy so you can claim the proper amount. I even insured my dirt-bike (which is not registrable in NJ) just in case something happens to it.

1) call the cops and let them know what's going on and fill out a theft report.

2) call the douchebags and tell them you want parts and you're coming with cash. Don't ask them for a VIN number you will be hung up on. Just tell them you need parts and have cash and you want to be first in line.

3) Go check out the vin number.

4) if it's your bike call the cops immediately (when you get the chance ).

Twistedengineering: you never know when this might be a major theft ring that the cops have been working on for a long time. You might just be the key they're looking for a put these guys away for longer than expected. It just happened here a couple of months back.
I completely agree, however I doubt a project bike would be part of a theft ring. Aren't most theft rings newer vehicles or older ones of high value?

I do have the title and bill of sale from when i bought it.  So I can prove that it is mine as long as it still has VINs.  That being said, I have recipts for everything I put on it as well so I can put together a good list of what should be on it without VINs if it's still put together.  Its a pretty unique combination that I doubt any of you would even have.

What does that mean? That yields you absolutely nothing of the bike is in 300 pieces and the vins are rubbed out.

Definitely go get the bike ASAP!!

Honestly I wouldn't call the cops. I would floor the guy as soon as I seen him.  ;)

You will probably get in trouble and you may get arrested but I bet that guy will think twice before he steals another bike!! >:(

That kind of big talk stops pretty quick staring down the barrel of the punks .45 auto.  Your comments are just plain irresponsible and dangerous.

I've been shot at before at point blank range and I work security at a club. I've been in 9 on 2 fights with just me an my boss. I grew up in the inner city of Cleveland and lived on streets where the cops didn't even respond to 911 calls. So please don't give me that BS. I'm 6'4 307lbs and I have two firearms in my house. If that idiot came to my house he would get more than his ass kicked.

And after you've had your "street justice", the thief and a bunch of his buddies (who already know where you live) come pay you a visit one evening.  They already have no problem with stealing motorcycles, why would they have a problem with beating the crap out of some guy who attacked one of them?

Guys like that steal stuff when no one is looking. Now if he knocked the guy off his bike and took it I would agree with you. I have been car jacked before and I have also have someone steal something from me when I was gone. Those are two totally different kinds of criminals.

Definitely go get the bike ASAP!!

I agree Custom.... Obviously some of these peeps have never dealt with the law... If you go to somoeone's house and there is any incident YOU are held responsible. DUmbest #$%* I have read on this site and this site has worlds of knowledge and great insight... Rather then being a dumbass, call the cops, let them know what you think of the situation and remember thsi is on the internet now.. #$%* on the net never goes away!!!

I've dealt with the law quite a bit when I was younger. This guy will get a fine and a few days in jail. If he's been doing this before he could probably care less.

@ ct_racer

I hope you get you bike back with as little headache as possible. If you are nervous about jail or retaliation then call the cops and meet the guy to check out the bike. You have to do what is right for you!  ;)

That's some impressive chest-beating.

I sincerely hope you get the opportunity to mature some before you get killed or seriously injured.  No bike is worth getting killed over, and nobody is too big to be killed by a bullet.

I would call this guy ASAP!! Call dibs on the bike and tell him you have cash. I'd hate to hear this guy sold the bike before you had a chance to do anything.

Gordon,

I understand what you are saying. I learned the hard way that I'm not invincible when I was younger. I am more than equiped to handle myself. The chest-beating comment was unnescesary but I understand where you were going with it. I guess people handle things a little different in suburbia. If I call the cops I will probably have to go to the station fill out a report and that will pretty much be the end of it. Growing up in an urban inner city you learn how to handle a lot of stuff on your own.

not necessarily, you should've seen the crap that came out of a temp metal shed/garage out in the burbs. It looked like meth country and they will steal anything not nailed down.

There is a group of people out there that would disagree wholeheartedly about dying for a bike or jockeying one for that matter. I'm not one of them, but they do exist. Infact, I wish someone would steal my Buell. Hey ct, when you call asshat ask him if he'll trade you your bike for a really nice 05 Buell. j/k.

Look man, there is always someone faster, stronger, smarter waiting around the corner. If he was even a half-assed crook he observed you before he poached your ride- he knows who you are and what you look like.

You will probably have to send a bike buddy to go down and look at it, get the VINS so he says he can run a theft check (no legitimate seller would mind this, right?).
If it is your bike then get the cops there ASAFP and arrest the dosebag.

Talking about how big you are and how many guns you have is the textbook definition of chest-beating, plain and simple.  I don't think pointing it out was unnecessary.  I'll admit that linking to an article about it may have been overkill, though. ;)

I'm glad you accept that resorting to violence may not always be the best course of action for everyone.

Point being, no matter how tough you are, when it comes to property that you care about, you err on the side of the law. I'd rather have my bike back, free, clear and legal than beat the #$%* out of some punk, not get my bike back and end up in jail and targeted for revenge if it's gang related.

The cops are usually pretty cooperative if they think you find a VIN/Serial number in possession of the thief. Yes, it's true that if you have nothing to go on that it's a lost cause, you can file a report and probably nothing will come of it. But if you've got a solid lead you have a better chance getting your stuff back with police help than without. Period.

You can beat the #$%* out of the guy at a later date if it really matters that much to you.

I was also "security" at a bar (we didn't glorify it, we called it "bouncer" or "door guy"). What I found is that 99% of people will avoid confrontation at all costs. The other 1% is .9% people who will try to back up their talk and get flattened and .1% people who are actually capable of brawling. It always sucked having to toss a guy out who was being belligerent and beating his chest. You never knew if he was .9%er or .1%er. One night when I wasn't working a disgruntled Marine beat the #$%* of the other bouncer and three large regulars who were tougher than I am. One guy had to have his ear sewed back together. I laughed at them but secretly I was glad not to be there.

i think also if you have photos of the build and so forth that would also convince someone who owns the bike.

CPD wont do a damn thing. The night I got shot at the policewomen told me to calm down and fill out a report. They didn't even send a car and I told them exactly where the guy was. I can imagine the look on their faces when I tell them I'm going to recover my stolen bike that I found on craigslist and can they come with me.

You are right about the 1% in certain clubs but I work in a small inner city urban club so that rule is a little different. Picture blaring rap music, drug dealers and thugs. I am not saying I am the ultimate bad ass but I hold my own.

When I was 12 a group of kids stole my 80's Huffy beach cruiser. That was my BABY! I seen an older teenager at the store and followed him home. Him and about 5-6 of his buddies where standing around and the bike was on the curb. I didn't want to risk losing it so I confronted him. I knocked him down and took off on my bike like a bat out of hell.

The guys came back and tried to jump me in front of my house. Lucky for me I had my louisville slugger in the grass! After that we had a few more incidents but eventually they backed down.

That was really dumb and I really could have gotten hurt but I got my bike back!    ;)

In most cases there is usually an alternative to violence. It always strikes a nerve with me when someone steals someone else's property. Especially considering how much work he put into it!

I am not a huge fan of the justice system. Too many people just keep commiting crimes, going to jail, coming out and doing it all over again. If someone stands up to these #$%*s then maybe they will stop.

dna.... I gotta take your side. Cops really don't give a #$%* unless its their stolen property. I've seen people drag their wife / girlfriend out of bars by their hair and the cops come and just tell them to "take it home". I've seen people destroy waiting rooms and the cops tell them to leave. I have this great sticker, its a picture of a cop and the caption is: I'll kick your ass and get away with it. Pretty funny but true in some areas.

What you really need to do,

is find out where he lives, then find out where his family lives, then kill everyone in his family. Ya gotta get everyone in the immediate family. That's just basic.

Visit him before he finds out about his family. Maybe squeeze his balls a little (not in a gay way unless you trend that way). Give him a few pricks. It's hard to kick against the pricks.

Next day, visit again. Offer him a deal. Give the bike back, plus $5K, and you will let him live. Some broken bones should go with this. I suggest fingers.

Then sell it on ebay!

These situations come up from time to time.
