Engage Warp Factor 9
« on: August 20, 2011, 02:05:34 AM »
Since I got my bike on the road it has had a slight cam chain noise but in the past couple of weeks it has gotten worse, a lot worse and no amount of adjusting would help. I decided the other night I would do some exploratory surgery, I lifted the rocker gear off to see what the cam chain looked like and the picture shows what I found, the chain had what looked like a half link in it and some notches worn out of the side where it had been trying to part company with the gears.  On closer inspection I found that the PO had left an extra link in the chain and had joined 2 inner links together, and also the timing was out by one tooth, anyway I fitted the new chain and timed it properly, I still cant believe the difference it has made, it has sorted out the idle issues it has had, also the difference in power is unreal, before it was struggling to do 140k now it pulls hard till I run out of nerve at just over 160k, also it now sounds happy and crisp, all I can say is it was money well spent and I now need a grinectomy ;D

it got fresh oil and filter about 100 km before it got the new chain, so in about 1000km I'll do it again

More like a born again 650  ;) when I got it registered I had a hell of a time because it hadn't been registered since '86 and I guess it wouldn't have done much running since then, but in the past month it has done over 1500km

Yeah most people haven't seen them, it is amazing how many times I have been told I can't have a CB650 because they never made one, usually followed by the comment that it must be a 550 that someone has bored out. When I first got it on the road I was rather surprised by its lack of performance, then after some tweaking with timing a couple of electrical gremlins and a few other bits and pieces, I got it to a point where I thought it was ok, and around what I expected, now after this last bit of work, I'm just blown away by the power from an old bike, it put the s#!ts up me a little when it lifted the front wheel in second when I got under it, especially after how it was before when I thought it went ok.
