I was amazed to hear how the hoodlums (mild term) were co-ordinating their efforts (i.e. riot locations) by using their Blackberries.  With encryption it is difficult to track them down.  Technology at its best!

You have a portion of the population that these oligarchs have convinced that the enemy is their neighbors, coworkers, minorities, and the poor, people in their own socio-economic class or lower.

At the risk of getting political...

The oligarchy divides and profits. It perpetuates itself by turning people who aren't very different in their daily lives into enemies. Two parties? Multiple parties? Laughable. There is only party: THEM. Superficially they take on and champion different hot button issues to seem different but underneath it all is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. That's the motivator.

Reading this discussion made me think of this paragraph from Orwell's 1984:

'If there is hope,' wrote Winston, 'it lies in the proles.'

If there was hope, it MUST lie in the proles, because only there in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within. Its enemies, if it had any enemies, had no way of coming together or even of identifying one another. Even if the legendary Brotherhood existed, as just possibly it might, it was inconceivable that its members could ever assemble in larger numbers than twos and threes. Rebellion meant a look in the eyes, an inflexion of the voice, at the most, an occasional whispered word. But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength. would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it? And yet...!

And we all know how that turned out in the end, don't we?  ;)

This is no 1984 paradigm, no oligarchs brainwashing the masses. This has been coming for a long time in the UK - there is no respect any more. Yes a lot of the rioters are young. It's not a youth problem. Where did all the young people get their ideas, beliefs and values? Let's start with their parents....

There is s till a strong sense of community in most UK towns and cities. Ultimately the community will help to stop this idiocy.

It was the "Big Brother" tone of the discussion of the riots that reminded me of that paragraph, not the rioting itself.

I was watching MSNBC and they have quite a few news people from the UK giving their take. Some live here and some live there. I think this problem is deeper than expressed here. I don't think you will like what they had to say about social conditions in the UK. You can probably find their comments on the web.

The funniest one was "Here we have an 85 year old female ruler who got the job from her Father, and will give the job to her Son or Grandsons. Over there you have a 50 year old African American President who was voted in and can't stay in the job more than 8 years."

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

they got really nice jails over there ... I'll take that jail like a little vacation from the old fight of daily "get by" only not really be able to "get by" just barely float ....
The #$%* is pretty deep. I hear they want to control the twatterz and the face#$%*,,.. hum sounds like I heard that somewhere else recently. reminds me of a summer in Seattle when the WTO came to town.

dont worry it will soon go back to the same no matter how much chaos goes on. Its all a waste.

All you can ever do is watch your own ass, defend your fam and property.

And thats not always from rioters.
