Getting a popping sound from the exhaust when coming to a stop, not as loud as back firing, idles at about 1100rpms as recommended in the book, even pressure from the pipes. Could the gas have water in it?

I'd suspect an exhaust leak of some sort - either at the head or at the pipe/muffler joint.
Popping on deceleration is a classic symptom.
Air gets sucked in through the leak and unspent fuel in the exhaust gets a second chance at life.......
