Things that fly at you!!!!
« on: August 11, 2011, 03:27:08 PM »
I have been putting plenty of miles on my bike as of late and since the fairing is removed; for some god awful reason I am getting beamed with bugs left and right... I do not mean the little kid that you barely notice... Im talking about the kind that hit you and feel like a rock hitting you... The ones that hit your glasses and guts splatted over your cheek or forehead... So it got me thinking today while I was driving and all the items, animals  and bugs that I have had the great pleasure of running into while driving.. SO far I have been hit with half a front bumper that hit the front of my KZ and I was lucky enough to drive over... Driving at night two weeks ago I had a raccoon run out in front of me but seemed more like at me.. No joke I stood up on the bike and lifted my left leg in the air.... Today I was driving and saw a hub cap wobbling and barely hanging on for its life on a tire.. I was like phewww; when I passed it... I couldn't imagine getting hit with a hub cap, may end up decapitated... What are the things you have been hit by when riding? Oh yeah, i almost forgot... I have learned never to be behind a dump truck... Talk about thousands of razors hitting your face and unable to pass for a 6 mile stretch... SIGH

A full-face helmet keeps bugs off your face.  And pavement out of your head - usually.

Let's see...

A trashbag full of trash, a queen size mattress, a dump truck here as well but he lost his load on the highway (as in the back hatch opened), a bird, millions of bugs and rocks (to include a june bug hitting me dead square in the right eyeball. Now I always wear glasses when I have the visor up)...luckily none of it hit me (except the bird and june bug) to knock me off.

Honestly when I think of these Honda bikes, helmets do not seem right... I had my fair share of accidents... Helmet I will pass on... Im not a speed demon and watch out for other idiots... If it happens it happens..

Junebugs really hurt. ;D

The most memorable things I ran over where a muffler and a coyote.

Nothing screams 1970's more than a gold metal flake helmet so you could always look for one of those.

First, I ride with a full face helmet, but usually have the visor open and wear glasses.  One year i had not one, but two bees!  The south end of them heading north, if you get my drift.  And one time, on a CB125, I hit a squirrel.  It was either the "lack"of motorcycle, or maybe I just hit his tail(didn't feel like that), but I did turn around and couldn't find a corpse.

I guess I've been lucky!

I have only been hit with small rocks and a few bugs. I have a full face and a half helmet that I wear when it's hot out. Even then I have a pair of motorcycle glasses and a a bandana on. I HATE bugs!

One time, a giant bumble bee (fuzzy, fat, black and yellow) got stuck between my leather jacket's collar, and my shirt collar.  It stayed with me from the parking garage, to the lobby, up the elevator, and finally started getting pissed off when I got to my locker.  It was like a cell phone alarm going off on vibrate on my collar bone.  When I got it out, it dropped, stunned onto the ground for long enough for me to smash it.

Luckily I've never hit an animal. It does seem that I've been drilled by more bugs this year than all the rest of the years I've rode combined.

I ride with an open face helmet but I always wear glasses that do a good job of covering my eyes. I can't ride without them. My eyes water too much otherwise.

I hit a rolled up area rug in the fast lane.....Just had to hang on lean back and gas it at the last second... the guy next to me eyes were like golf balls, and and a big thumbs up... Dumb ass didn't give me any room to dodge it..So I flipped him the one finger victory salute and shook my head..

Most notable is a bumble bee.  Bounced off of my chin to hit and sting my chest.  I was going ~70.

Many years ago my dad and I were riding up I-75 in Ohio and at about 80mph a dark cloud appeared in front of us.  It was a swarm of insects of some kind.  He had a windshield on his bike, I was wearing a open face helmet with a flat comp shield.  I had my leather jacket on and I just had enough time to jam my shield down to my jacket.  We hit that swarm and sounded like someone beating on a drum.  The shield and my jacket looked like someone had shot small paintballs at me.

I had an old bubble shield and a bumble bee hit my chest and did a couple laps inside the shield before falling out. Hit a bee stinger first on the arm once. My first road ride I was following my brother, it was fall and the road was covered with grasshoppers, when he went past they would jump and I would collect them. I was too nervous to close the gap and get next to him.

A non-living things flying at you.  In my riding days before I got married, a friend and used to go out trolling.  We spotted a couple of ladies in a car stopped at a light.  We said hello, wanna go for a ride, etc.  They ignored us, so as the light turned green, my buddy said they were ugly anyway. They heard him and at about 35mph they emptied the ashtray out the window.  This was in the early 70's when you could put  carton of ashes in the tray.   We both got a faceful.   :o
