check pipes my friend is riding-probably not good
« on: August 12, 2011, 09:55:45 AM »
i've been helping a friend with his early model cb750. he bought the bike with these pipes. it runs OK. it's good when you first take off, but maxs out at 60mph. we were about to clean and rebuild the carbs (probably hasn't been done in years). my question is: how much are these short pipes affecting his performance? and if he keeps them what should be change with the rebuild? re-jet? he's running pods and a dyna ignition too.

check over at hondachopper.com for questions about those pipes, he will be fine performance wise. Will need roughly 120 jets. Check the plugs to see what color they are after you get the carbs done, and check the airfilters to see how dirty they are. And when he was running it, was it windy? Pods will get bothered by side drafts. Easy way to check, tape up the sides of the outside pods, so 1-4, tape the outside half of them up, and maybe the tops of the other two, go for another ride and see if it changed. This is the reason I run stacks.

Pods, electronic ignition, and those stacks, all that is left is to rob his mother and drop the F bomb in church.  I like them, and have ridden with only spigots, but that cooks the paint off the frame and I am too lazy to repaint........:-)

Ugh.
Might as well vote Charlie Manson for club president.
Good spokesmodel for the marque.  ::)

The faster that thing breaks down and is unridable, the better.

Oh yeah.  And get off my lawn!

Doesn't matter what anyone says anywhere, those pipes are crap and with the reduced back pressure they offer, the valves will be screwed in no time. Yep, perfect recipe for burnt out valves....... ::)

Do all the HC guys read lips when they aren't reading email?

There are a very limited number of people who are actually capable of improving on stock, as evidenced by the myriad of posts here trying to correct the ailments brought on by customizers, stylizers, economizers, fad chasers, and others desperate to be included in any kind of circle jerk, just to be in touch with others embroiled in the flail as much as they might wish to be.

What kind of glorified "skill" is there to taking a hacksaw to a set of pipes (after carefully measuring, of course  ::) ), except to attract some attention into their otherwise mundane and irrelevant existence?
Doesn't every two year old learn quickly that if he makes noise, he gets attention?  It becomes a way of life for some.
Certainly one gets faster attention with high noise levels than learning/understanding how carburetors and exhaust systems actually work.  Is social status really more important than self improvement?

While it certainly doesn't have to be stock to work well, real improvements are quite seldom as easy as some simple movement with a hacksaw or Jama's caveman club.

Is the facade of improvement more important than realized improvement?  Far more often than not, a return to stock is far more improvement to the machine than the majority of fashion modifications.

it's actually not THAT loud.
What BS!  Space shuttles and jack hammers are louder.  You gonna compete with those for attention, too?  This the very reason why laws had to be made requiring silenced vehicles.

I'm not inclined to help people break laws on the internet or in person.  I guess HondaChopper's people are different that way.  Anything ok for personal gratification?

I've tried to help a lot of people on this forum.  Some successfully,  but sometimes...

Can't a fella get jacked up on red bull and get out the hacksaw to impress his girlfried around here without taking heat?  Yeehaw, and gettyup.  When the dust settles he has a bike he can't sell for much over $150 and that is where it gets interesting to me.  "get off my lawn"  I smiled at that most of the afternoon.

" Why does anyone get offended by what someone does to their own bike? I dont get it. "

You made me think about it after I cheered knowing someone else would like to know what these control freaks are up to.
Every time any owner strips whatever precious Honda part the horrified purists parts go up in value. That's not the part that bothers them.
What bothers them is they sat up late at night, their breast full of wonder and estrogen, unable to sleep, dreaming about their lovely darling and all her glory... and next thing you know someone else doesn't share their emotional deluge and their reaction is they must spread their mind museum as far as they possibly can, taking over as much of the real world as possible.

a 750 beside the 350 or what ever at 8 thou rpms would knock a midget over at 300 yards... but if thats what your into whatever...    go with up sizing the  mains.... i bought a bike with the pipes cut right below the foot pegs and on the ride home i had to stop to by ear plugs (it was an hr ride) and i almost wanted to take it back it was so loud after another half hr even with the ear plugs..... fixing the pipes was first on my list

so as far as engine damage... tune it right and it will run fine.. your friends ear damage a different story

This makes me think of Jimi Hendrix.  I think it's safe to say that typically, in the hands of most guitar players, keeping the guitar from feeding back is best, because technically speaking, feedback is "wrong.". in the wrong hands, it is just ear splitting, noise, without any musical value.

But every now and again, someone comes along, like Hendrix (or a few others), who takes this technological "mistake" and creates something special, and far exedes our expectations.

Some guys, who have studied and mastered these machines, can look at them, see what works stock and why, and adapt the original intention to his (or her) vision.

Those adaptations interest me.  But until I become one of those dudes, I'll keep the exhaust on, and the neighbors pitchfork out of the back of my neck. :)

not that I am old or nothing but if you had that bike in my neighborhood the same thing that happened to my neighbor that used to come home at 3 am with straight pipes and then rev his engine would happen to you
he don't live there anymore and that truck doesn't run anymore either

the question was, will it hurt performance. yes, it will why? no scavenging. yes, you can make it rev out but there will be a severe HP loss.  even running a 4-into one with a collector and  no baffle is better than that by a long shot. I personally don't care how loud a bike is, but that's just asking for trouble. also, when you cool an intake valve too quick they like to crack. when that motor cuts off the exhaust will cool very fast, particularity on the cyls with the exhaust valve open....  even top fuel cars have more pipe than that.... tops out at 60? my cheesy 78 will hit that in second gear wound out. just saying.
