Topic: Well, sh!t....broke a bolt on the clutch center

 I was changing the oil/filter on my CB500 and taking the opportunity to replace a broken pushrod.

 Had the oil drained, new filter in and old, broken push rod out. I checked the manual for torque specs on the clutch center and it said 29-33 lbs. Seemed liked a lot to me, but OK. Snapped a bolt off in one of the posts.

 I'm removing the clutch basket now to see if I can save it, but is that right on the torque specs? Seems awful high for a bolt with a 10mm head.
 I'm thinking of replacing all four of the bolts. What grade should I get?

 Tragedy averted. My local shop was able to get the broken bolt out easily and ran a tap through the clutch center. Pep Boys had the correct bolts in "class 8.8" for $1.29/4.

 I'm gonna grab a slice of pizza and an RC cola and take a break. Hope to have it back together in a couple of hours.

That torque spec seems high. Is it inch pounds?

Agreed!  Those 10 mm should only be 7 ft-lb or so.

I believe the torque for that would have been "in/lb" not "ft/lb".

12 in/lb=1 ft/lb

 There is no center bolt on the 500. The basket is help on with a snap ring.

 The local shop also suggested that maybe it was in/lbs., and I tend to agree now. But, the aftermarket manual I have says ft/lbs. In retrospect, it MUST be a misprint. Maybe this will help someone else from making the same mistake I did.

I keep a copy of Pocket Ref (http://www.pocketref.com/) in the garage. Packed with all kinds of information, including torque specs for bolts by diameter and thread pitch. Has helped me when torque info seemed incorrect, or missing altogether.
