Oil leak found (Fixed)
« on: June 06, 2005, 06:03:11 PM »
Hey All,
I found my oil leak.  ;D  Not where I thought it was. I was thinking countershaft sprocket. Other are telling me shift seal. I pulled the cover off tonight. It is leaking what look's to be the oil pump cover. As soon as the bike is started it is pouring out the bottom screw. I checked and there tight.
It look's to be a simple gasket, or do I need to use some Permatex?

Thank's
 Paul

Well, start with the gasket.  Seems to be a simple enough test now that you know where you're looking  ;)  Nice to find the problem and it's nice and easy.

If you're talking about the large O-ring inside of the oil pump cover, it's not available as an OEM replacement. My advice -- buy an O-ring kit from an autoparts store -- on that has lots of different sizes. If memory serves, the one you want is in the 45-47 mm range. I used an O-ring from the plumbing dept. of my local hardware store.

It is an O ring?
Might the one from a 72 cb500 fit or cure it till I can score the right one?

If it's the right size.  Do you have the parts / service manuals for the bike?  They're available for downloading.

Look's to be the same. I'm going to switch it out later tonight. Look's like it is a long night. I just sanded down the header and painting also tonight so I can ride to work tomorrow. I have already put 600 miles on it in the last couple day's

Paul,
Just fixed this problem over the weekend myself.  I ordered a new Honda o-ring, when I received it, it seemed just a bit thicker that the original one.  When installed, the pressure dropped enought o turn the oil sensor on.  So I went to Kragen auto parts and picked almost exactly same o-ring as the old one for a fraction of what paid for the Honda one.  No more leaks.

Just taking a break from sanding the pipes there going to look good. When we had to re-use o ring's in the AirForce (Jet Mechanic) we would coat them with some petrolium jelly. I will do that while the paint is drying. I just ordered 3 seal's from honda they where 20.00 I'm not sure if the cover is one of them. I know he ordered a countersprocket and shift seal. Not sure on the 3rd.
Not much oil should come out should it?

I Think It's the time of year, I have the exact same problem with my 500 K1.
According to Bryan Jones (If I remember correctly) he states that the o-ring listed in the manual is sized incorrectly stating 47mm I think.....so look out for that. I have a question... If one puts in a thicker O-ring to get a good seal, will this keep the cap slightly away from the pump rotors and allow oil to creep out the sides of the oil rotor as opposed to through the compression system. Or does it still have to find it's way back in to the outlet (Confused?)

Yep the manual is wrong and there is no part number for that "O" ring, you are supposed to replace the pump!! From memory its a square section "O" ring and I have in the past used a larger ring and an "O" ring making kit to reduce the size which worked but as the bike has gone I dont know for how long. Too thick a ring will lift the cover loosing oil pressure as the end clearance is critical

I managed to strip out 2 of the 3 screw's on the 500 :(  I used a friends screw impact and it didn't work. I had to drill them out and worked like a charm. I just put the cover and gasket from the 72 500 on and no more leaky.
