Road Trip: Coast to Coast & Canada!!!!!!
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:18:57 PM »
Hey fellas,
Not sure if this is the right place for the post but its where I spent most of time. Anyways me and my cousin are on a cross country trip on our Honda cb750s and thought I plug our blogs. We've been on the road for a couple weeks now and loving every minute of it. I'd like to thank all you guys on here for helping out with troubleshooting. We head east out of Seattle WA tomorrow so I have some prepping to do. Maybe I'll run into some of yall down the road. Ride safe and send your good vibes!

A few things: Best of luck, feel free to let me know if/when you take 90 through Sioux Falls, SD as I can spare some floor in my apartment, and where did you get your saddlebags?

Awesome! I will definitely take you guys up on that offer. I will give you a heads up beforehand. I got the saddlebags on ebay, shipped from pakistan. They look amazing but I don't know how long they will last. I think I'm working them too hard.

Greetings from a coffee shop in Kingston, Canada! So far this trip has been amazing but it's up until now that my cousins bike is having issues. We are stuck but wanted to see If you guys could guide us in the right direction before we start looking for a motorcycle shop.
The bike: 1975 CB750 K5, everything is stock except for a dyna s ignition plate and the exhaust diffusers were removed by the PO.
The problem: the bike is runing rough and hesitates above 3k rpm or so. Cylinder #4 back fires a bit.
We pulled the plugs and read fine, if anything they are a little on the lean side. We have put 6k mi so far. It's darn cold now and we caught some rain the other day, my only hypothesis is that the bike is mad at us because it's a pre Madonna from CA. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

You could have some crap in the float bowls.  Try turning the petcock off, removed the petcock bowl and check the screen, then open the drain plug of each carb and see what comes out.

If you get near Philly I have extra room.  Safe journey...Larry

Still stuck in Kingston... We tried our best to find the problem that still occurs. We cleaned the carbs out, checked the floats, did the valve adjustment, put new plugs, and new plug caps. cylinder 2 &3 will not ignite. Sometimes it will run fine but after awhile 2&3 will die out. We suspected the coils be faulty so we are fortunate to be near a motorcycle junk yard, picked up another set and still 2&3 will shut off. We even put coils 1&4 from both sets(wired them accordingly) and 2&3, again, gave us problems. So it's not the coils, is it possible for the dyna s ign. Plate to give us such short out?

Coils rarely go out. Try to pick up a points plate & fresh TEC points from the junk yard. See if 2/3 fire right on points. You could also try the ignition parts from the working bike to see if the problem goes away.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Have you got an ohm meter?

Here is the Dyna test info.

If you make it to Toronto I  recommend 109 Cycle. Or send me a PM.

Since it wasn't the coils, I tested(via test light) the connections where the dyna module sends current to the coils. 1&4(blue wire) held a steady light. 2&3(yellow), held a flickering light and when testing would cause the engine to idle lower. I'm assuming that's not normal? We took it to a mechanic to perform the ohm test and turns out that the ignition plate IS the problem(according to the dyna s manual). The unit is under a year old and still under warranty. However, we are in Canada and not the US so there are warranty conflicts. $200 plus tax for another dyna here in Canada! No thanks. Tomorrow we will go to the bone yard and see if we can get the oem points.

I have the entire old points plate, points, and condensers, that I took off my K0 a few months back. I think they're probably ok. I was trying to get rid of a problem, but I don't think it was the issue. I'm in Toronto. Could get it to you somehow. John. 416-809-5138

I truly appreciate your help John. We are about to head to the junk yard and test our luck. We need to get the show on the road, trying to avoid camp fees. If for some reason they don't have the points set up, we will give you a call. Thanks again for everyones support!

Nope... we just got back from the shop and the bike is still running rough. We found the oem plates off a junker, they were in decent shape but who knows how long that bike was sitting in the fields. They were able to get the engine to run on all 4 but had difficulty timing 2&3. They ordered new points (cheap chinese ones), but they had to shave off some metal on the contact breaker to make them fit? According to them they were the right points for the bike, unless we had the wrong plate. We pulled it off a later SOHC cb750, they should be correct right? Anyways, now with the new points she is running worse than with the old ones...still can't get the timing correctly on cylinder 2&3 because they kept running out of room. So they did the best they could, but she still aint running right. We are running out of options here.

If you've got a shop @ your disposal, when not install electronic ignition?  Save all the time running around trying to find junkyard parts, shipping in Chinese points, etc.

Just a thought.
Come on!  We're burning daylight!

Here's the scoop... We bought a timing gun and swapped coils and my ignition on his bike. Bike starts right up and purrs like kitten. We tried to order a new dyna but most websites wont ship to Canada because of warranty issues. So instead of waiting for shipping, we decided that the fastest scenario would be if one of us just rides to the US to purchase the part and cross back to Canada. Turns out Z1 enterprises is only 3 hours from us. Z1 is just a parts facility but, we explained our story and situation and they were understanding enough to sell us the part in person. As I am typing my cousin is on his way to Z1 or back. Now that we know that it is the plate, we wanted to find out what caused the problem in the first place so that it wont happen again. We tested for faulty grounds, the rectifier/regulator, coils, and everything seems to be sound. The only hypothesis is that the motorcycle was running on a 20 fuse instead of a 15. Our problems started after the blown fuse. So somehow the ignition plate was affected by the blown fuse or the dyna s itself just failed because Sh*t happens.

Just got to Montreal last night after a week and a half in Kingston. Everything went well, got the new plate and it's running nice. From Boston we will ride the coast till we hit New York. Well, off we go in search of the tastiest poutine. If we don't make it to the states it's because we had heart attacks.
