Three bad spark plugs?
« on: August 15, 2011, 04:55:52 AM »
A friend brought his friends CB500 to me to trouble shoot.   They had rebuilt the carbs but were leaking like crazy and when they put it back on, it ran for a bit and then never started again. So i said id take a look and see what it might be.  I pulled the carbs and adjusted the floats and re installed,  1 carb still leaking but should be an easy fix so i left it on for now.   Started trouble shooting the no spark issue.  Found that one of the points wires was loose, once I plugged it back in i started looking at the timing and power to the coils, points gap was also too big (corrected that). Hooked up the timing light, finding that only cylinder 4 was getting juice.   I was using my timing light to check each wire for power. HOWEVER i didnt think to go ahead and throw new plugs in.  I finally pulled the other 3 plugs out and they would not spark at all when grounded to the engine. SURELY not all 3 are bad,  once i got a new plug in they all had spark.

I have not checked the caps yet, but ive never seen 3 plugs go bad all at one time.

"glazing" will ground plugs immediately.  It is a coating from improperly burnt fuel, air, and oil that prevents sparking by insulating the electrodes.

so maybe the previous owner put too much lead additive in his fuel?
