Her dog ate it....
« on: August 15, 2011, 05:54:53 AM »
Hi All,
my daughter bought a dog knowing her landlord did not allow them,
so we are taking care of it until she finds a new apartment or house
to rent in Boston, Ma.

So far today the dog has chewed:
cb550 sidecover,
my new car seat cushion, which I put down for a moment while cleaning out my computer room,
all my tomatoes that were on the windowsill,
my sneakers,
a paintbrush,
paint mixing stick,
a couple of gallon milkjugs (empty).

Probably a few other things while I am typing and trying to list stuff on ebay for sale.

She better find a place for this mutt shoon.
peace,
michel

Damn it! He just ate all my blackberries.

I think it is time to put him in a cage for a while.

Dogs chew things they're not supposed to when they're stressed out, bored or both. I realize it's not your responsibility but it would probably benefit your stuff to give the dog plenty of things he's allowed to chew on. Real dog toys from the pet store. How old is he? As they get older and more comfortable being alone they tend to grow out of chewing the wrong items as long as you don't leave easy targets laying around (my dog is 7 and still loves a pair of used panties).

Puppies and kittens are funny. People seem to forget what a nightmare they can be. You have to seriously do some dog proofing. And get used to barking and whining because that's usually how they react to situations they don't like.

We take care of dogs for their (neighbors) owners when they vacation, sometimes. When we get a "chewy" one, we go to the pet store and get a BIG bag of rawhide chew things. They usually like those better than the house parts. (Then we save the receipt for the owner.  ;D  ).

Dogs are pack animals.  It ain't natural for them to be left alone.
If they have no model for behavior, they resort to behavior many can't imagine, as they explore unguided, undirected, unconstrained.
And if you aren't alpha, they will show YOU what is acceptable to do.

How old is the dog?  Could be just teething if he's just a pup.  Both of my dogs chewed on things they weren't supposed to when they were puppies.  It was just a phase and now they have full roam of the house even when I'm not home.

Dogs are pack animals.

True.

It ain't natural for them to be left alone.

Not true. It is totally natural for some wolves to be loan wolves. But you wouldn't want to meet up with one alone in the middle of a prairie.

Dogs can be alone. Even in a pack, not all the wolves are in visual contact with the alpha 24/7. But you want them to be comfortable sleeping and relaxing when you aren't around, rather than nervously destroying everything. Nervous, anxious dogs don't rest or sleep, they regress and become destructive. Sometimes it just takes time before a dog will be perfectly alright being by himself for the day. But the point is they're not totally alone: you're coming back and that makes them content.

Texture is also an issue. I got a puppy that loved firm but soft things such as clothing(imagine a bunched up shirt), her dog bed and toys. She would not chew rawhides period. It did not matter what it was, if it was hard, she wouldn't touch it. I found that harbor freight has rope toys that she still loves. Best part about them is that they are very strong. We tried a rope toy from walmart, gone in a day with strings all over. The harbor freight rope, she has had it for months. We toss them when they get too disgusting to touch.
So my vote is for good strong rope toys.
We tried a kong toy and she chewed it up in about 2 days. Those things suck. And this is just a cocker, not some rott or anything like that.

Actually, I have my own dog, but he is not friendly towards Ashley's dog.
We have a TON of dog chew toys, but he preferrs the challenge of getting my
attention while I 'm home weorking on the pc.
Also, have 3 cats that he likes to chase aroundf the house, so he definitely is
NOT lonely.

Sorry you're stuck in this situation. My dog destroyed many shoes, belts, bras, panties, furniture and stuff he was generally not supposed to. But it did not last. He is a good boy now. Doesn't do anything bad while I'm gone. He ate the crotch out of my newish girlfriend's panties but she's a 4th year vet student so she understand these sorts of things.

One thing I figured out is that dogs are like children.  Sometimes they need a spanking.  Not hard, just enough to let them know they fokked up.  However it only works at the time the deed was done.  If ANY time has passed they won't remember what they were spanked for.

Ashley's dog chewed up one of my soccer balls!  >:(

That's it! The mutt is staying in his pen until I AM READY to play/supervise him.
