Missing tappet cover seal?
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:12:44 PM »
Bike is a K5

Soooo...I'd never done a valve adjustment on my bike since I've owned it because it never really seemed to need it. I decided to try it today though just because I've put a lot of miles on the bike without checking.

When I got to the #2 cylinder's exhaust valve I looked at the tappet cover and there was no rubber seal. I was staring at the thing the whole way so I can't imagine there was one in there that fell out without me noticing and I checked all around the ground and on the bike to be sure it hadn't.

My question is, if it has been like that all along (thousands of miles put on the bike since) would it be possible for that area NOT to leak under running conditions? There's been no oil seeping out at all but the tappet cover didn't seem all that tight.

Again, I can't imagine there was a seal that fell out as I was staring at the thing the whole time but the slim possibility of a loose seal dropped into the cylinder is making me a bit concerned.

You got lucky. Maybe there was gunk on the threads that sealed them.

The o-rings are usually stuck into the recess in the cap & have to be "toothpicked" out to change.
If somehow it did fall out, it's bigger than the tappet hole so how can it easily "fall" inside it?
The first thing I did to my K6 was to check valve lash (who knows when last done) All the tappet o-rings were "flat" & bottomed out and although they didn't leak I replaced them all.

Yeah, checked all again, no way for the seal to get in without trying. Just paranoid I guess.

A couple of the threads on the tappet cover look a bit chewed so maybe it had jumped a thread. Ordered a new tappet cover and new seals and will finish the adjustments once those get here.

Thanks for the replies.

Those covers crack easily when tightening so don't over do it. I would estimate seal contact plus 1/2 turn.
