I used electrolysis to remove rust in my tank.  It worked great.  I than put a couple hand fulls of small machine screws in the tank and tumbled the tank all padded tight in my dryer.  It looked new inside when I was done.

There are many ways to get rid of the rust, lots of opinions, and some real experiences.  After a good deal of reading - and worrying - I used the POR-15 product.  There are some precautions but it did an excellent job.  The petcock looks like it's missing the strainer that fits over the tube.  I'd replace that first and see how much rust is getting through.  Could save you from cleaning the tank.

The "straw" is the normal fuel intake and there is another lower intake for the reserve so you can see how that works.  You are just missing the filter that fits over the whole thing like a sock.  Usually when you order a new filter the o-ring seal should be included.  Don't leave the petcock on when using any cleaning solutions.  Find a rubber stopper of the right size at the hardware store.

I would hazard a guess and say your tank does not look bad and should clean up nicely.

I've used that product before and it works well - be careful of flash rusting though.  I suggest coating the inside of your tank with oil because even if it's dry the flash rust will appear.

From the reports I have seen Evapo Rust is a phosphoric acid and is supposed to leave a coating that protects the steel so the water rinse is ok.  Any other acid needs to be rinsed with baking soda/ water rinse.

never used it myself but the reports are good.

I don't mean to hijack, but how do folks recommend getting oil all over the inside of the tank to avoid rusting? Should one just use fresh motor oil and slosh it around, then drain out the excess?

Ya no flash rusting at all. Now using it again on my other tank.. Hope the same results.. It was cool to see the towel I used to filter the product with leave rust and all this gunk in the towel..

If you are going to oil the inside of the tank I would recommend using two stroke oil.It will rinse out better than motor oil and not leave a strange sludge in there.

Hell, I run 2 stroke oil with every fill up in all my old bikes. 100:1 ratio, mixed in a 5 gal can with marine stabil. Keeps tanks from rusting, keeps petcocks working smoothly, carbs as well, keeps top ends lubed. And the new 2 stroke oils don't smoke or stink, you can't tell at that ratio. plus...what oil does pass through the engine to the exhaust, coats the pipes and will help keep them from rusting (have you ever seen a 2 stroke with pipes rusted from the inside out?).
