My first bike was a 1976 CB750K. I traded some rare baseball and football cards to my brother in law for it. To him it was just a junky old bike. To me it was an entry into motorcycles. I was 16 it was 1990 and I had a motorcycle. The problem was that I hated the way it looked. So I tried to make it look "cool".
I sold the bike in 1995 and bought an old Triumph Bonneville. I never thought much about CB750s after that. The Bonneville opened up a new world of Brit bikes for me. The bikes I wanted were Triumphs, Nortons, and BSAs. Then I got the June 2000 issue of Cycle World.
http://www.m3racing.com/pressmedia/CWjune2000/cycleworld.htmlInside was a story about M3 and their CR750 Dick Mann replica. The CB750 had got some decent press in the early 90s but I still couldn't get past the boxy looking tank and wide seat. Those were sandcasts/K0s anyway and they didn't really look like my bike. When I went to the Honda dealer to get parts it looked small and old next to the newer bikes. It wasn't really considered a classic yet and it wasn't unique or rare. I wanted something different. But if I could get a CB750 cheap and make it look like that CR750 replica that would be interesting. I might even get into vintage racing.
Well I got a cheap K1 in 2001.
The CR build was on ..................... or so I thought. I soon realized that alot of people were building CR replicas. My life had changed to the point where I wasn't going to be vintage racing my CR, so I went back to wanting a Norton Commando. Through Commando dreaming I came across the woodgate Dunstall site
http://www.woodgate.org/dunstall/ Everything you ever wanted to know about Dunstalls (kind of). When I saw the pics and specs of the Dunstall Honda for the first time something clicked. I wanted that. Even better, I had a K1 disassembled in my garage.
The search for Dunstall parts started around 2002/2003. I would eventually get enough kit parts to start building the bike in 2009. The build took about 3 years and is complete for now. Here's the build thread
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=55860.0 I still want to do a rear disk conversion and I need to get the fairing lowers painted and the Decibel mufflers chromed.
Its the bike I wanted when I was 16 but didn't know existed - a unique CB750. To bring the story full circle the Honda dealer that I used to go and get parts from is long gone (Imperial Honda). I went to an event a few saturdays ago called Retro Saturday at the local Yamaha dealer. I didn't feel ashamed or inferior of my CB750 anymore. It was voted best in show and I was very proud to own this bike.
Thanks and good luck to all.
