so can anyone enlighten me on how you spray paint lol

from what i get.....

i prep the surface (sand and then wipe down with mineral spirits)

take the primer and give it 2 light to medium coats with a few min in between.

wait a couple hours and i wet sand it to smooth it out.

so after wet sanding i wipe it down nice and clean and after that do i have to apply another coat of primer?

then after 24 hours "fully dry" i can apply the paint (but the bottle says i can also apply the topcoat within an hour or topcoat after 48?)

moving onto the color

then i apply 2-3 coats within a couple of min of each other

wait 24 and wet sand and then i clean throughly

after everything is nice and smooth do i shoot it with another coat of paint? i know the paint gets dull after sanding but will clear coat bring the color back out?

then shoot 2-3 coats of clear

let dry for 24 hours and if there is any imperfections wet sand.

if i have to wet sand do i shoot another layer of clear or can i take some clay bar or wax and will it shine again?

also how many coats is too much? i know automotive spray guns shoot out a way heavier coat of paint then spray cans. so if i want a nicer paint job do i just keep layering?

when i only shoot 2 coats the paint is really orange peeled unless i give it a really wet coat but then i run into danger of getting paint runs

any advice?

I really recommend going to an auto paint store to get real auto paint mixed up (they can put it in high quality spray cans too), buy primer from them, and buy a two part clear (in a can if you need). All layers can be applied about ten minutes apart without sanding the primer as long as the temp is warm and as long as you do not use sandable primer.

Warning: use a mask and wear long sleeves. The two part clear WILL cause serious damage that landed one member on this forum in the hospital, although that is not a typical issue.

Your local paint shop will give you appropriate directions which I really suggest you follow. You'll hate yourself if your paint peals or lifts just because you tried to save time/money.

Its really a "feel" thing. It depends on type of paint, mix ration, temperature and air pressure. I sprayed my Buell and it came out ok. It was my first time spraying. I then sprayed my 1997 Honda civic with some paint I got online. It came out with a ton of orange peel. After about 10 hours of wet sanding it looks decent. I painted my brothers bike and that came out awesome. All in my garage all around the same time yet all different results. I'll post some pics later.

im confident on the spray paint i dont need a super high quality paint just just wondering on how to spray paint well

i use a good respirator too btw dont worry im not breathing any of the stuff in

can anyone tell me after i wetsand the paint if i clear coat it will the color come back out or do i have to spray it again?

Best to try a sample of the paint system and method you are wanting to use on some other (non-critical) part. It is hard for anyone to tell you how some "non-super high quality paint" will respond. Test it.

You should seriously find everything that Kong has written on the subject. He schooled me good, and although I can't wait to get anoter crack at painting with that first experience under my belt, his tips were invaluable.

Remember paint tanks time and good clean environment. Also remember after sanding clear coat use high quality polishing compound or buffing compound.

And the clear coat you should use is Spray Max 2k Glamour. Best stuff ever

The problem with spray bombing is that the paint doesn't achieve an extremely hard finish. You might go to buff that clear and drag the whole paint job with it.

Hey spray paint looks great, you only notice it isn't as great if you use a magnifying glass.

I also repainted the emblems. Looks pretty damn good for 60$ if you ask me

Yeah that's actually sprayed out of a gun though... It's a lacquer and it looks even better in person.

I would say do very light coats let dry and repeat lots of times if you're going to ball can it. You really way to use a urethane enamel (mixed correctly) in a decent gun. This will give the nicest most durable, gas resistant finish.

I've had best success with cans by doing two light and smooth coats followed by a final "full" coat. Too many coats creates more points of failure and makes it more likely to chip.

I also have a local paint shop mix up very good cans. $20 per can abd completely worth it if you don't have a sprayer.

problem i have run into with lower end clears are that they don't hold up to gas and just gets eaten away with even the smallest amount og gas touching it.

What about SprayMax for a final clear? Ive heard good things about it.

Can you get rattle cans of metallic flake? Perusing House of Kolor's ebay listings and none of the flakes are available in a can.

you can order this in just about any paint code of any modern vehicle. Pictures are of a "metallic" orange that has mica flakes in it and looks awesome in the sun. Larger flakes I would believe you could only do with  a serperate stage in a  "flake gun" .
