Newbie w/Honda 1971 CB500
« on: May 05, 2006, 08:33:23 AM »
Hello all. I just bought a cruddy old CB500 and hope to get some feedback/advice. It started and ran but not well. I have pulled off the tank and carbs. I rebuilt the petcock and am waiting on the carb kits. Lots of parts need replacing and since  I am drawn to the Cafe Racer look and will start shopping for seats, clip-ons etc, on-line/ebay. This is my second bike. 2 years ago I sold my 1971 CL175 with only 8000 miles and haven't had a good nights sleep since. Anybody in far north Texas into vintage metric bikes?

AT LAST! Another 500!

Sick of all these "I'm aNewbie and just bought a 750..." posts    ;D

Sort the carbs first and then go through the whole tune up process from ignition timing to plugs (buy new ones) to tappets and cam chain tension.

When it runs sweet (and it will, just keep posting progress here) then you can worry about what it looks like.   8)

I think they already got the message.  I keep saying "my 500/4 this" and "my 500/4 that", one of them will probably tell me to f off back here if I want to talk about it!

It is a different world though with discussions on race cans, re-chipping the EFI and "double bubble screens (God knows what they are...)

Funnily enough, there are also threads on "will synthetic oil make my clutch slip?" and "how many mpg?" etc.

So back to 500/4s.  We never had a '71 in the UK, it was launched here slightly later.  Mine's an April 72.

I thinks I will stay with something I can fix.  Although I could probably reprogram an EFI with the right gear.  Thinking of changing some of the setting on my Accord, (SOHC/4 too) not realy impressed with the automatic shift points.
