Joining The Red Headed Stepchild Board
« on: August 17, 2011, 12:27:21 PM »
Well, now that the sale of my 550 is pending (expting the cash today or tomorrow). I went out and picked up a '77 Goldwing.

Some of you might have met me might recall that I was going to buy a wire wheel GL this spring when I ran across the 550 and just couldn't pass it up.

It has been great fun. But the 1400 miles I rode during the Rally a few weeks ago just reinforced for me that I want a bike that can chew up miles.

So, here is it. And I guess my penance for selling my SOHC/4 is that I will be spending more time on this thread.  :o

Nice.  I may start looking for one too.  Took my wife out for a ride on a friends 83 Gl1100 and she said " ya know I wouldn't mind if you bought one of these". :)  Probably go for an early one too.

Looks nice Dan. Is it pretty roadworthy right now ? You must have passed on the cheap 650 you were going to check out.How many miles on the ticker ,those things go forever. Glad you nailed one down.  Eric

It needs the carbs cleaned and I'm going to replace the cam belts, but otherwise doesn't seem to need much.

The 650 was a disaster. The owner had left it to sit outside next to a shed for a couple years. The rims were rusted and peeling. The side covers were missing, the frame was rusty, and to top it off the gas cap has gone missing and the tank was filled with what I assume was water.

It was just more of a project than I was interested in.

I'm thinking now that I will wait until February or so to look for another SOHC/4

Just our of curiosity - care to share what you sold the 550 for?

Sure, it's searchable on eBay anyway. $1,500. I had 48 watchers, but only one bidder. He was shocked and very happy to win.

I thank you will love the wing. I have just finished a 75, went for the first good ride yesterday. I have really gotten into these early wings. I have a 79, two 75's, a 76 LTD and a 81 interstate plus several for parts so if you need help just ask

Thanks.

Brought it home today. Planning a marathon work session next weekend to try and get it back on the road. I don't want to be without a bike for very long. Plus I am riding the 550 to my sister's where I do the work and the buyer is picking it up there. If I can't ride the Wing home it means a 2 hour trip on 2 or more trains to get home vs about an hour drive.

One more thing I should have told you about,is you need to change the timming belts. The Gates belt # is T274 or NAPA # 250274 or Goodyear Gatorback #40274. This is very important because if one should brake  it WILL bend valves. I always change belts before I ride one of these wings. Go to  NGW  you will get lots of info on early wings like here for SOHC 4's

@Anders: Thanks. I was thinking of removing the fairing and replacing it with a Road King style windshield. But I do like how it looks and I am going to ride it as is for a while and see what I think. I am really looking forward to a couple of weekend trips this Fall to see how I like it.

@6adan, that was already on my list. I was supposed to pick up new belts from NAPA Sunday, however when I got to the store the counterman could find a record of my internet order from Friday, but no record that they had actually placed or received an the belts from the warehouse.

In the end it was a minor annoyance as I didn't have time to start the job Sunday anyway. So I will pick them up during the week and install them next weekend.

Nice.  Some kid in my neighborhood has a late '70's naked brown Goldwing with clubmans on it.  That's the Ukrainian Village for you.  Just throwing out ideas, hehe.

There were a couple GL cafes at Rockerbox. The Wing looks surprisingly good that way.

Although they are so long and low even with clubmans and a bum stop seat they are really more lead sled than racer.

I love my Wing.
I bet my 75 will stay up with or beat your 750 even with a low cylinder.

My 75 died this weekend.
Look's like a motor swap at my place next weekend. I have a 78 that has good compression.
Anyone in the area are welcome. Have a friend riding in from Hastings NE to help.
I'll have food and other goodies.
So not bad, got it 5 or so years ago paid 450 had a shop put in a water pump. 59,000 on the clock now reads 36,000 so I think it has had a god life  since I got in on 3 cylinders. Cylinder 3 read 80 lbs Not even going to check it till I get the motor out.
