Cb550 Timing advancer.

So my bikes timing advancer doesnt seem to operate right.  I cannot move any part of it by hand.  upon checking ebay I noticed my advancer has a black plastic piece that locks the adnvancer arms in place. It appears the pivots are free but are locked in the full advance position.  Does anyone else have a black plastic piece that is a cylinder that covers the whole shaft piece that the arms kind of sit in?  I would post a pic but my bike is outside and its dark out. 





what Im trying to epxlain is there is a plastic piece that is a cylinder the goes around the whole round part of the advancer down to where the 2 arms touch the cylinder...


This causes the two arms to be all the way out to where the two tans sticking out on the back part of the advancer are.  and no amount of force seems to allow them to move.
anyone...anyone... bueller?

I found the picture of the piece in question... apparently it came with the DYNA S previously installed on the bike.

But why would it lock my advancer at full advance??

I had the same issue back when I first installed the Dyna-S on a 400F.  The rotor for the Dyna was too large and was forcing the advance weights out.  As it turns out I had purchased the DS1-2, which is for the 550 and 750 and comes with a larger diameter rotor than the DS1-1 for the 350 and 400F.  I don't know why this is happening on your 550, though, since it's supposed to use the larger rotor.  Is it possible the advance unit on your 550 is from a 350 or 400?

Gordon, should the advancer still move freely.  In other words should I be able to grab the arms, pull them out and they snap back?  Or are they supposed to be in a locked position?  Keep in mind I am using the dyna s.

Well I figured it out so I thought I would share.  Hopefully no one else runs into this because it is so stupid. 

The Previous Owner of this bike installed a Dyna-S.  The stock advancer unit was one of the ones with the pins on the shaft.  The instructions clearly tell you to remove this pin and make sure the rotor spins freely.  CLEARLY this was too much for this guy to comprehend.  He jammed the rotor on and neglected to care about seeing if it spun freely.  IT DID NOT.  Upon inspection I found the pin now bent at a 45 degree angle still lodged in the shaft.  I removed it and re installed.  The unit works great now.  Only drawback being that this unit was installed like this for so long that that springs are definitely worn.  Now time to try and track down these springs.

I cant believe how well my bike idled at 1,000 rpms at full advance all the time.
