Make sure it's a 6 sided socket.

What I have done in this situation is take an.impact and let it run until the bolt finally catches. Works every time I've had to do it.

As stated use a 6 sided socket and i hope you got a gasket set not just the head gasket, and i gotta say it again READ THE MANUAL REPEATEDLY AND CAREFULLY before re-fitting the cam cover or you WILL bend valves

You don't really mean a leaking head gasket.  When you say 'notice' you mean an oil leak, right? A leaky head gasket would make it run terrible.
