73' CL175 Scrambler - latest find
« on: August 19, 2011, 05:54:04 AM »
A friends neighbor had a couple bikes in the garage.  I bought this one from him for $350
Not sure what ill do with it, but it runs great,  needs a rear fender and one turn signal light isnt correct. Other than that it pretty much just needs cleaned up.  Prob flip it. Thinking about some enduro type tires like you saw on the CT175's (yamaha).  Maybe do a flat tracker look.

My first real bike was a '73 175 Scrambler. Mine was orange and black. It was such a cool bike. We cut the muffler off and put sink pipe extensions on it with little washers stuffed in the ends of the pipes for baffles. It made a great sound!!!

That one looks to be in great shape! Good luck with it.

That was a common mod back in the day in my neighborhood. The sink pipe extensions were chrome and the same inside diameter as the outside of the exhaust pipe. Slipped right on and was tack welded in place. We welded the washers to a short bolt, drilled a whole in the pipe for the bolt about 2" from the open end and put some nuts on the top. You could turn the nuts and open the pipes up completely. Drove the cops and my mom crazy ?? :o
Who knew we invented Super trap mufflers way back then?? ;)

Cool. When I was in high school my dad found me a '71 SL175. Later we added a Cb175 to go with it. I had a great time with my SL. Around 1983 or 1984 I replaced the semi-knobby rear tire with a road tire creating what they now would call a supermoto. I was way ahead of my time. LOL

That reminds me of the old Snuff-or-Not exhaust modification that was popular back in day. For those who don’t know what that mod was, here’s a good read that explains it:

Looks like a 1972 (K6) to me, red or green in 1973 (K7), the 1973 had a different rear frame section with a hoop grab rail yours has a grab handle on the left side.
I have a green K7, if you decide to break it I would be interested in the exhaust.

I'll be damned. I didn't know anything like that was even being made back then. That's the first time I've ever seen that add! We just thought that stuff up back in '72 or '73. It worked really well though. Our was not as slick as that but worked the same none the less. 8)
