What does this do? CB500 airbox part

It goes between the plenum and the airbox. Anybody know what it does? Can I just omit, or if I can't find one maybe try and make one?

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Interesting.  I just checked my 550 and it doesn't have that piece.  Looks like it might just be a metal spacer that helps strengthen and protect the joint between the plastic air filter housing and plastic plenum.  Probably not absolutely necessary, but I'm sure it serves a good purpose.  Doesn't look like it would be too difficult to fab something up.

I believe that piece is threaded to accept one of the bolts attaching the box to the frame.

Cool - so can I just use a washer or something?

As long as it fits and doesn't interfere with normal fitment of the filter box and plenum, I don't see why not.
