Any Hypermotard owners out there?
« on: October 02, 2011, 06:21:59 PM »
How do you like the bike? SImilar riding position to a CB? In that it's sort-of upright? It looks like a very fun and unique bike.

(oh sorry - I should have posted here instead)

I'm seriously thinking about buying one. I just did 1400 mile trip on my 74 cb550, and it performed great with very few issues, but I got the hankering for something with more performance abilities. I don't want a harley or a full on crotch rocket... I want something a bit unique and fun. Plus I love the sit up riding style. I thought about a modern classic like a Bonny or Thruxton, but that seems too close to what I already have in the 550.

I have the 2009 1100cc model... Probably the most fun bike I have ever owned. Nimble, quick, and lots of torque. No complaints so far in the last 6 months I have owned it. The riding position is more upright kinda like a Motocross style bike. Great bike!

Yeah, my pal out in LA has an 08 1100 and he loves it. I'm looking at an 08 1100 S with the larger tank, or a 10 796. Insurance is half on the 796.

So big question: On longer rides, can you kind of slouch / cruise? Or does the bike require more attention all the time? Does that make sense? I'm interested in the nimble & fun, but I'll want to cruise longer stretches on big highways as well. (not all the time, but sometimes) I want to be able to sit back and enjoy sometimes.

Thanks

You can cruise at 80mph with no issues...any faster than that you may want to crouch a little. Not a lot of attention when cruising just sit and GO.  Ducati does have a small fairing they sell for the Hyper but I am not a fan on how it looks installed...but that just my opinion.  I do recomend installing the Ducati Perforamce GEL seat..I find it more comfortable than OEM seat.

Fuel tank is small (3gal) unless you buy the extended (6gal) from Cali Cycle Works.  I get about 100miles per tank...basically when my Odometer hit 100miles I start looking for a fuel station. Some people complain about the short range but it is not a problem for me... At 100miles I am ready for a break anyway...

I have riden the smaller 796, however the 1100 has always been my favorite. The 1100S is also nice with the improved front and rear dampner/shocks which is also height adjustable. The newer Hyper has the EVO engine which are single plugged versus dual plug on the 2008 engine model.

The 2008 Hypers has a recall on the Battery Mount (under Seat). The battery would sit too "loose" in the Battery Compartment and shake/vibrate so much that it will eventually break off the positive terminal cable that runs from the Battery to the Starter Selenoid.  It is a recall item..and they are installing a top brace on the Batt Compartment to reduce the vibration.  My bike did not have the recall mod installed when I bought it so the battery cable broke off on my way to work one day. Luckily I was not far from the house and just pushed it back. I also added "a lot" of velcro tape arount the battery compartment and the battery to help it from moving too much.

How much are they asking on the 1100s you are looking?

Thanks for the details. I'm in Canada so prices are a bit high, even though our dollar has been mostly par with the US. I live a few minutes from the border, and importing is a possibility, although I require a recall letter from Ducati and they are reluctant to provide it as they are trying to protect the Canadian dealers. I understand this, and I would shop here if the prices were even close, but often they are 2-5 K different.

Having said that, I found an 08 1100s with the Cycle works tank, Ducati comfort seat, and several other add ons for around 10k. That actually seems about the same as U.S. prices, especially when considering the "S" version.

The used prices in general seem to be pretty strong, which is good for current owners. A local-ish dealer is getting a used 1100 in within a week or so, I hope to take it for a ride and see what I think. I've heard nothing but great things about the bike.

Recall Letter...that is interesting. Im assuming that applies to Ducati Specific dealers in the USA if you are looking to buy from them and bring back to Canada...is that righ?

Another option you may look at if its available is to find an Aprilia Dealer in the USA. In many cases they have used Ducatis in there inventory...that is how I bought mine. You may save some money $$$ and use it on parts...just a thought.

No the recall letter applies to any Ducati brought into Canada regardless of where you purchased it. It is to show that there are no outstanding recalls on the vehicle. Ducati HQ in California can provide the letter, or sometimes you can get an authorized dealer to provide the letter; especially if you bought it from said dealer. HQ has threatened some US dealers not to provide the letter to Canadians--especially on brand new bikes. But I understand that they turn a blind eye on older used bikes. It has become very political. I love the bikes, but I'm not a fan of Ducati as a corporation.

However, I did just hear that HQ may provide letters on 08s and older... so maybe things are changing a bit. As I mentioned, it's mostly to protect new sales, which is an issue here on all brands... and cars and trucks as well. Canadian pricing has not caught up with a strong dollar as fast as we'd like.

WHat do you think of 10k for an 08 Hypermotard 1100 S with the big tank, comfort seat, etc? I've looked at used in the US and the price seems comparable. If I go non S, the price drops 2-3k.

Is this $10k USD$ or Canada $$ and Whats the mileage? Any other aftermarket parts on it other than the tank and seat?

I paid $8,500 USD for My 2008 1100 (non S) with 11,000miles. It came with Full Termis 2-1, nicer Bars, Rizoma Mirrors, Comfort Seat and new Tires... just to give you an idea.

It's a hit or miss on the used Moto market with price and aftermarket components installed so its hard to compare.
