Yamaha Virago clutch problem

Hey guys, I came into a 1982 Yamaha Virago with a bad starter... as some will know they all have bad starters. When I first got the bike I could get it started but with a lot of grinding. Once started it ran and rode great. So I took the left side cover off to replace the #2 Idler gear. When I took the cover off I wasn't thinking very well and took the clutch arm off instead disconnecting the cable. I put it all back together, took it outside, and it started great. Deciding to go for a ride on it, I let the clutch out and... nothing. I sat there like I was in neutral. The only thing I can think of that is different is that I took off that clutch arm and didn't put it back together properly. I took it back apart and looked at it, but there isn't much to it. The bolt is cut to fit into the arm where the nut goes, then on the other side you have a plate with 3 sockets, a plate with 3 barrings, and a plate with 3 sockets. What I believe is a very simple design has put my bike out of commission. If anyone has any idea what is going on or what I missed let me know.

At least my Honda don't give me problems.

Honda used the same style of ball and ramp on a lot of bikes. it probably needs adjusting or maybe the balls are not seating correctly ( painful ;D)
I'm not too sure , but I think there is a slot/pin arrangement to prevent the inner seating from rotating. It may be in the wrong position ( I havnt done one for over 10 yrs) Your going to have to take it apart again. If you can get a picture I'll probably remember exactly how its done when I see the parts.
About the starter,
First time we sold one ( was working in TWS, Bridgend, Suzuki/Yamaha) we ended up contacting Yamaha about the noise, they told us its normal  :o.
I think there was a shim kit that improved engagement slightly, but they always sound like its destroying itself.
