Credit Card Concern
« on: August 20, 2011, 03:10:56 PM »
So I went to ACE Hardware today to pick up some metric fasteners. I went to cash out with my debit card (as credit) but he clerk was having problems. I was there a week ago and the card worked just fine. So, she had to manually enter the number, exp. date, and billing zip. It processed. Then she said she needed to make a copy (using the old machanical swipe onto the carbon copy) as it was their policy if they have problems using te digital swipe. After she made the copy I saw her copy the CVC onto the carbon receipt. Now I'm concerned. I got my first card before these machines so I don't know if that's common process. I didn't want to raise a scene so I just accepted and left. Should I be concerned?

Yes, you should be concerned.  I don't see any reason why the cashier would need the CVC off the back.  I'd call and get that card shut off immediately, and make sure to tell the bank what happened.  They may want to look into this themselves.

I went ahead and locked the card. I'm gonna call the store manager tomorrow. If I don't get a warm and fuzzy, I'll just get a new card.

If the transaction needs to be entered into the POS system manually later on, the 3 digit code is often required (it is on my Quickbooks POS system). I'd worry about what is done with that carbon copy, how it is stored and who has access to it.

I've already cancelled the card and ordered a new one. Lesson learned for young'ns like me when it comes to the old manual swipes.

yeah.  +1 on getting new card and callin store manager.  never had to have this done before at the register.....and they have seldom asked for the cvc number in person....that is usually only asked for over the phone or web purchases.

It would be kinda nice if Wal Mart would even check an ID when someone is on a spree eith a lost/stolen card.

I lost a card and by the time I heard anything about it there was a considerable sum racked up. A none of the stores ever comared a picture ID to the card. I guess they just want to move merchandice by any means necessesary.

I say better safe than sorry. I don't mind a little scrutiny as to who is using my card.
