According to my Clymer, they suggest 5.4 oz. (160cc).

Your 1978 CB550 is a K3 model.
The CB500/550 had three different fork styles.  A fact that the Clymer manual ignores.

Gleened from owners/shop manuals:

CB500 K0-2 : 5.4 (160cc)  Replacement  /  5.3~5.6 ozs.  (155~165cc) at disassembly
CB550 K0-2 : 5.4 ~ 5.6 ozs. (160~166cc)
CB550 F0-1 : 5.4 ~ 5.6 ozs. (160~166cc)
Cb550F2 and CB500/550 K3 -  4.8-4.9 ozs. (145-150cc)

Note the above are drain and replace values that leave some oil behind.  For dry assembly add 5 - 7 cc.

Cheers,
