So it looks there are definitely ways to start an engine on an auxiliary or ghetto-rigged gas tank. Will these methods work, and will the engine start and idle without throttle cables as well?

Why not?  Without the throttle cables you can still control the choke, the idle speed, and the throttle opening by using your fingers to adjust the throttle opening.

Hey around 68 or 70 we used a douche bag sorta like a enema bag. some girl had it in her apartment. Wait a minute I think it was beer in that bag because it was hanging from the light above the kitchen table and we were passing it around I do remember the girl laughing her ass off. Things are foggy from that time. Thank God I sobered up.
