The tyres that are on are 410h18 rear and 90/90h18 front and I think the rear is too big ? what are the recommended sizes ?

I think it is a transfer but it has been laquered over, it was like that when I got it

the stockers really aren't that bad and handle nicely but, i really like the avons on my 350... which would be the same wheels and tires.

Stock tires (OK, tyres...) were 3.00S18 front and 3.50S18 rear.
Several makers have decent tires that will work, fronts are fairly easy to get in 3.50 or 90/90, larger than original but they look pretty decent. A 4.00 or 100/90 rear looks pretty big.
Metric tires don't exactly match inch sizes. A 90 width tire is 3.54 inches, 100 is 3.93.
The K81 is a nice tire and gives good results when used on both ends, but the smallest current size is 4.10, big on the rear rim and way too big for the front. Dunlop also makes the K82, it is very similar to the K81 but has a speed rating S (112 mph) while the K81 is H (130 mph). For a 400F the S rating would be adequate. Note that H rated tubeless tires derate to S with tubes usually - the K82 is a tube tire and rated S with tube. The K82 comes in all the smaller sizes you'd want. Although a block tread design, the K81/82 has a centre groove that causes squirrely handling on roads with "rain grooves" ground along the direction of travel. They are better for this than rib type fronts though.
K82 tires are available in the UK but doubtful in North America.

You can get Avon Road Runner tyres but they are expensive in USA. Recommended 90/90 front and 110/80 rear, but you really need wider rims to use those sizes.  I know some 400F's have strange handling though, doesnt seem to be anyway to find out which ones are good and which bad without riding them (my brother had several at different times, F1's, F2's some would try and roll over play and dead at 90+mph)

I use Avon Roadrunners, 100/90 on the back and 90/90 on the front. No problems with them dry or wet.

well, i should have known with a title that included tyres as opposed to tires that i'd have some difficulty but, um... i think i may just leave this thread for the ones across the pond... you know the "weirdtalkers".

No problem lads I have worked around Oldham, Middleton (Manchester) & Ashton-U-Lyne,  on and off  over the last 6 years or so I,m used to the banter now, I even follow Man U.  :D

Thanks for all the replies to my Question I think it'll be either Dunlop K81/82 or the Roadrunners depending on price & availability

Cheers, Smithy

Hey Biffta. If you're looking for like minded souls, check out the VJMC at the Nabs Head, Salmesbury, Preston. Laid back - no pretentious types - and some of 'em know plenty of stuff that helps fill in the gaps in what I need to know to keep the old girl rolling along..

Skidpan, I can't find any dates for the Railway show for this year, but if you find out let me know and if mines back together and running I'll try to get there, I can't make it to the Nabs cos' its our wedding anniversary 23 yrs.  :o   and no bike to go on doesn't help.

I've sorted out some tyres now, a mate who works for a tyre company has got me some Pirelli MT75 90/90-18 H & 110/80-18 H for a very good price, and being a Yorkshireman I have to watch the pennies ;) [/color]
