Colorado Muffler Law
« on: August 25, 2011, 03:58:03 PM »
I'm thinking of just putting a cut-out tip on the end of my 4-1 exhaust.

Does anyone know if that is legal in Colorado?

I looked that the law and all it says is Muffler required. What do they consider a muffler, a muffler with a baffle? I see other states that are much more specific saying they can't have cutouts, or straight pipes, etc. Colorado simply says "Muffler required".

Depends on where you are in Colorado, and how much you're concerned with following the letter of the law.

In Denver, for the past several years, it's technically been illegal to run anything but the factory exhaust.  But that, so far, has turned out to be all bark and no bite.

For the rest of the state, if all that is required is a "muffler" and no other specifications are made, then I'd say you're at the mercy of the officer who pulls you over and the prosecutor.  Don't make a nuisance of yourself and you'll be fine.

In Texas you must have a "baffle", which here can just be a washer attatched to the inside of a pipe and bent up on one side.  Pretty lenient.  Hope this helps.  I would just say "Fokk it!"  My 750F has the stock 4:1 header but NO MUFFLER (LOUD).

Thanks for the replies. It seems that that if you don't draw attention to yourself, you should be fine.

Last night right after I got the bike running again I took it out in my neighborhood which never sees traffic and I had it setup like I like it, riding without glasses since I was going to the end of the street and back (all 150 yards) and passed 2 cops following each other. They didn't even blink. I won't see another cop on my street for months now, ha ha.

Here in Texas it takes a lot to get the fuzz on you.  You gotta be driving erratically or speeding.  No one has ever siad anything about how loud mine is.  Florida was like that, too, so I'm guessing most places are like that.  Colorado is one of the most beautiful states in America, so I know there are numerous motorcyclists running about.  You prolly have nothing to worry about.  Just keep it at a lower rpm when possible.

Yeah, no burnouts or open headers next to the cop shop, you'll be alright.
