I need someones experience on cb750 stators
« on: August 26, 2011, 08:30:45 PM »
so a friend of mine offered to sell me his 1978 cb750 (k7 I believe?) about a year ago for $300. great deal no doubt, but being broke, Ive been letting him sit on it. recently he got in a nasty bicycle accident with no helmet, had to have emergency brain surgery to relieve hemmorraging (if thats how you spell it . . . )

he called me the other day and said he was getting rid of it, he wants me to have it, pay for it when it can, just come get it. no question, done deal . . .

its gonna need alot of work, but the thing that scares me most right now is that the left engine side cover (the stator cover) has got a crack it it from being laid down. no big deal, the cover is inexpensive. what worries me is that this crack leaks oil.

my question is, on this bike, does this cover seal oil? should i look for a crack in the lower case? on my cb550, the stator is dry . . .

wtf?

thanks

Yes, the stator cover on a 750 seals oil.

my question is, on this bike, does this cover seal oil?

thanks

+1 Scottly. It is a "wet" stator affair.

And I'll add, there is little probability of stator damage as well. Common low level disaster.

Tip: When removing this cover, put the bike on the centerstand. Put a small shim under the footpedal of the stand (not the foot) to tilt the bike to the right just a tad. This will get the oil in the stator cover to drain back into the crankcase and you'll have a lot less todeal with when removing it. Its not a lot of oil anyway, but enough to make a mess. Use a drip pan too.

Once you've done this you can remove the shim as the cover will not refill until the engine is running.

Suggest scoring a new gasket if you plan on putting it back together soon, as you may rip the original one. If you have time, see if the original one comesoff clean before buying the new one. No guarantee it won't leak even if it comes off clean, though.

A lot of these engines get parted out on ebay so you should find a good cover fairly easily, or try at a bike wrecker. Admittedly they are one of the most damaged parts and thus at a bit of a premium but that's life.
If the crack is not bad and the stator is OK, you should be able to seal the cover with epoxy or JB Weld. All this cover really does is carry the alternator coils and seal in some unpressurized oil that dribbles through the end crank bearing, it doesn't have to be super strong.

It doesn't have to be super strong, but it does have to be super straight.  If the crash/lay-over tweaked the cover it will possibly leak, and possibly cause contact between the stator and rotor.  I sold just the cover locally for $30.00 a couple of weeks ago to a lady that crashed going to work, she replaced it at work and rode it home.

awesome, thanks for the advice. I will probably just get a new cover. the engines getting a topend gasket set and I believe there are sets available with the stator cover. perhaps for tuning purposes i will jb weld the crack, but I am told its a pretty slow leak.

Picking this bike up tomorrow, build thread to come!
