Blowing oil
« on: May 04, 2005, 07:09:58 PM »
Appreciate the help getting the old girl started but...now am seeing oil blowing out of one of my exhuast pipes as well as the breather(?) tube at the backside of the cam cover (whatever that is called). To make matters worse, it is blowing directly onto my rear wheel. Recently "rebuilt" the engine and have not yet gone back to re-adjust the valve timing. Tell me this is only excess oil from the rebuild blowing off or the un-timed valves and not a problem with the engine rebuild itself (sadly enough my mechanical ability is in direct proportion to my knowledge of the correct terminology). Appreciate ANY assistance.

How many Miles on the rebuild? Rings take time to seat. Couple hundred miles.

As to valve timing that wouldn't cause oil to blow out the breather. (unless you left the valve seals out)

I assume you staggered the rings on reassembly? (you didn't line up all the openings did you?)

If so, you might try giving it a little run time to seat in. 10 miles or 10 minutes of run time isn't really enough.

Did stagger the rings. Maybe she does just need more time to be re-broken in. Apprecitae the help ad any other suggestions anyone has. I love this forum.

Didn't hone valves as I didn't pull them out. Bad?

I think he means the cylinder bores.

No. Didn't think it was necessary as the valves hadn't been moved about (although the tone of these replys is starting to make me think elsewhere). How screwed am I?

Above two posts aren't talking about valves. What to know if you honed the cylinders where the pistons go up and down.

When my bike was blowing OIL (not just oily smoke) it was because a valve guide died.  It was a bunch of oil -- in 30 miles it covered the side of my bike with a film....

I suppose bad valve seals could do some as well but if this wasn't a problem before then it probably isn't now.

Gotta be careful skimping -- rebuilding is enough of a pain in the ass that you should definately have checked when you had it out -- If you bought a top seal kit then they give you new valve seals and I would definately have put them on.

two cents,

Zeke

Oh, good (see how badly I need this forum). Did have cylinders honed out by a local garage, but not bored- still using original pistons.

Haven't taken her out due to the terrifying way all the oil blowoff is being diverted directly at my rear wheel (also still working on some wiring bugs). Only running short while but oil still coming. Think I was unclear about the above valve thing. Did buy (and install) complete gasket kit and believe it had all necessary seals. Seem to remember valve seals: little bowl-shaped buggers with metal rings that you could probably slip over your fingers? If valves, any particular reason I'm losing oil out of only one of my exhaust pipes? One bad valve? Still praying for the breaking-in answer but it brings me back to the only one pipe question it seems to me.
