Can't get my head cover back on!!!
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:28:55 AM »
This may sound stupid but I took the upper cover of my 550 engine off to polish it, and now I can't get it back on.  There are two dowel pins on the carb side of the engine that lines everything up.  I can get the cover to sit on those but everytime I rock the cover towards the exhaust side it wants to slide the cover to the left or right of the dowels.  At first I thought it was the valve adjusters so I took the tappet covers off and put a rubberband around them to hold them up out of the way, but still had issues.  Then I tried cleaning the dowels with a scotchbrite pad and sand paper.  This didn't help.  I even laid the cover on the ground even to make sure it wasn't warped and it lays totally flat.  So my question is, does the engine need to be in a certain position to get that cover back on, or am I just not holding my mouth right? :o)

Swear at it.  That always helps.  If you are doing the rubber band trick and the rockers are held back fully, there shouldn't be an issue installing it.  Are you sure the rockers are all being held back as far as they can go?

Do you have the tappet adjusters backed out all the way.  If not you're trying to push against the valve springs, which are pretty strong.

I'm pretty sure I tried the swearing part :o). I'm also pretty sure the rockers are all the way up, but I will check and double check anything at this point!  Thanks

Not just the rockers, but the adjusting screws at the ends need to be backed all the way out so they're not making contact with the valves when trying to put the cover back on.
