Starter motor won't stop spinning...
« on: August 29, 2011, 07:52:42 PM »
Lately when starting my CB750K4 with the starter, the button when it was pressed wouldn't spin the starter.  So I'd either pull in the clutch lever (because I thought the problem might be due to the clutch switch) try pressing the starter button again (usually it would start in a couple of tries) or I'd kick start her.

Tonight, I tried starting the bike using the starter, but when it started I couldn't stop the starter from spinning.  I even turned the ignition off and it kept spinning.  I had to take the ground off the battery to stop the starter.  If I reattach the ground to the battery, the starter starts spinning the engine even if the ignition switch is off.  Bad solenoid?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Thanks folks that's exactly what it was.  I've ordered an aftermarket solenoid, but I was wondering if anyone has taken apart the bottom part of the solenoid to rewire it.  It looks like there is a section of the lower case that has been peened over.  Since I now have 2 bad ones I've got nothing to lose.  Mine was stuck but in the process of "un-sticking it" (removing the top part, I screwed up the wires.    I'll let you know if I'm successful.

bollingball, you beat me to it...Hondaman has an excellent write-up in his book about it with great pics to help you out. The best tutorial I have seen. Get the book and do it yourself and that will pay for the book.

If the solenoid is stuck it will keep the starter motor running even after the kill switch was moved to off? Now would a stuck solenoid continue to be stuck if the minus the continous spinning of the starter and just cause excessive heat to the wires and blow the main fuse continuously?

How do I get my hands on a copy of Hondaman's book?  Labor day is just around the corner.

To answer the prior question... Yes, the starter keeps running even if the key is off.  Trust me not fun.  The only way I was able to stop it was to remove the negative batt lead.  My finger lost a little skin that day!

the solenoid is a mechanical plunger with a spring that physically connects the fat battery wire to the fat starter wire. If it gets stuck it doesn't give a hoot about the key being on or off. There is also NO fuse at all in that circuit.
