drooping mirror can i fix it?
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:11:51 PM »
Seems like a silly question but mirror is loose and won't stay put. I can't seem to find my way inside it to tighten it up. Any thoughts?

Back off on the picture some. There should be some screws to tighten. If not it could be the glass.

I found the following doing a search on the www.  If there are no adjusting screws on the exterior of the mirror there may be an interior adjustment behind the glass.

Harry O.

"Bought some aftermarket mirrors. After installing them and adjusting them twice the ball joint was so loose they wouldn't stay in place.

I took the mirror off the bike and boiled it in water for 2 min to make the plastic housing more "limber". Then I used a knife to luxate the mirror out of the housing (careful otherwise the mirror cracks and I used a glove to hold it because it's friggin HOT). In the housing there is a nut putting pressure on a spring to push the ball into the joint. This is what I tightened up by screwing the nut further in. To get the mirror back in the housing you have to boil it again and carefully put it back in place. If the plastic is too hard boil it longer.

Hope this helps if some of you guys have the same problem. No need to buy a new mirror right away."

That did it. Mirror came out with the warm rubber. Tightened nut behind and popped it back in.
To put it back in I chilled the rubber and mirror, heated the chrome dish then squeezed them back together.
Thanks so much!

Talk about perfect timing! Just the other day I was sorting my spares and, among the mirrors, found one that was too loose I thought it would wiggle to much with the road wind. I was thinking about throwing it away, supossing there would be no fix, but kept it just in case. Think I'll give it a try...

Well, the story goes like this. I have like 4 or 5 spare mirrors that I have bought when the price was right, just in case. I'm building a Sanglas bike and I'm going to use Honda switches and mirrors.

Found that one with the crushed back, like if somebody has hitten the mirror and the sheet metal back bent into inside, if you know what I mean. Hold the mirror rod in the vice and pulled the mirror, thus the sheet metal bent back into shape, but as I said a couple posts before, it was too loose, I believed it was too far gone.

But following this thread' advice I was able to remove the mirror! Then I could slightly tighten the nut -used a little loctite too-, bent the sheet metal much better, and put the mirror back!

I always thought the sheet metal was pressed to "grip" the mirror, so there was no way the mirror would get out. But it does. By using the screwdriver to press it out I broke a tiny piece of glass, almost nothing. I would say that you can use a suction cup to take the mirror out, it is worth a try.

Great tip!!! Sure woulda been better if they put that nut on the outside bit I guess the bean counters figured they could make a killing selling replacements.
