My bike isnt finding neutral and i'm pretty sure the plates are worn down and need to be rebuilt. But I'm not really on the level where I think i can handle taking apart and putting together the engine.

Help!

When you say plates does that make you think it may be clutch related. That you can do,and also tinker somewhat with the shifter mechanism but about anything else tranny related will be a case split  :-X  Don't own a 400 but lots of folks here do that will chime in I,m sure.

Start with the simplest solutions first.  Is your clutch adjusted correctly?  I mean the clutch itself, not just the clutch cable.  If it isn't releasing 100% when you pull in the lever you might never notice it, but you'll have a helluva time trying to get it into neutral when sitting still.  Also, old, thin oil can contribute to this problem.

Check your clutch first.  My guess is that your clutch basket fingers have small grooves worn in them from the clutch plate tabs.  Those can be filed down with a metal file, and all your shifting/neutral/clunkiness should just about disappear.

The trans is actually easy to access.  You have to pull the engine first, but you can leave the cylinders and head in place and only split the cases with the engine upside down.  Don't do that until you check your clutch basket though.
