Hey everybody,
I have a question relative to my new bike (82 CB650SC) but more about that era Hondas in general, and I'm hoping one of the knowledgeable people on here might have something to share.
The bike I just bought needs a brake rebuild but the dust seal part#45109-460-841 and piston seal #45209-460-841 are showing as unique to this year and model bike - and every place on the web I've called that has them listed (bikebandit, cheapcycleparts.com and a couple others) say the dust seal is backordered indef. from Honda. No hits for the part # on ebay. Meanwhile, the old ones were in bad shape, destroyed on removal (it was a mess in there), then swept up off the shop floor and thrown away by my trusted assistant Mr. Heineken.
I'm thinking, how could it be they made a caliper for one model only?! So I'm wondering about how the brakes developed at Honda. When did dual pistons come out? What diameter were they? My bike's pistons are 27mm, but the next year the nighthawks went to 32mm pistons (along with the complete DOHC redesign). So maybe these calipers were common to 82 and earlier SOHC Hondas? If the calipers aren't identical, wouldn't the seals at least be the same if the pistons were the same diameter?
Is there a parts fiche anywhere that would give me the exact dimensions of those seals? And is there a "history of Honda motorcycle brakes" anywhere that would shed light on when the major redesigns happened?
Found the parts from one supplier in the UK, but I'd really like to get rolling ASAP and don't feel like waiting for int'l shipment.
