Does this rattle sound bad enough to where I shouldn't ride?
« on: September 11, 2011, 09:56:28 PM »
Recently bought my first motorcycle a few weeks ago.  I have read on this forum about cam chain rattle and it has me wondering if it is safe to ride with.  Someone told me that if the chain snaps, it will ruin the engine and possibly lock the rear wheels.  Since I am a very new rider, I doubt I will be able to handle a situation like this well.

Here is a video of my 750 idling after starting it.  I don't hear the rattle while riding and at stop signs it is a lot quieter. (I can't post a link to a video???  Search for "1971 Honda CB750 dpuma8")

The rattle does not go away when I hold in the clutch.  The previous owner said that a Honda Technician said syncing the carbs was worthless because these engines shake so much that the carbs get immediately thrown out of sync.

I have ordered a sync kit from eBay and am waiting for it to arrive.  Is there a way to tell from the video what is causing the rattle?

these bikes do rattle a bit but it usually gets better when it warms up does it rattle with the clutch out and in gear ? you can put it on the center  stand to see don't gas it let it idle in gear on the center stand

they all rattle a little in neutral the timing chain rattle is usually more like a hissing rattle and you can just adjust that get the book for it here on the forum to see how

all these bikes rattle in neutral warm or not

and as far as the idiot honda tech said ignore him my bike took 27 years to come out of sync and it only did because of wear
and you can sync the carbs your self too and where is the video at?

Bahahahaha stupidity at its finest.  Definitely sync the carbs.  But don't be surprised if it still rattles some.

You made me think about it after I cheered knowing someone else would like to know what these control freaks are up to.
Every time any owner strips whatever precious Honda part the horrified purists parts go up in value. That's not the part that bothers them.
What bothers them is they sat up late at night, their breast full of wonder and estrogen, unable to sleep, dreaming about their lovely darling and all her glory... and next thing you know someone else doesn't share their emotional deluge and their reaction is they must spread their mind museum as far as they possibly can, taking over as much of the real world as possible.

I love how so-called "professionals" can be such dumbasses.  Although, the po could have been being deceptive as well.

My K5 motor does not shake at all, in fact it is quite smooth.  Have you seen the video with the glass of water on the seat while the motor was revved on a bit?  Yea, it was smooth.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
