Congrats on the bike... Welcome to the site... Post pics please.... When you got home it started to act up? Did you drive it home? Did the PO start it up and drive it with the choke? How many miles does it have? How long has it sat? do you have gas in the tank? is the tank clean? carbs been cleaned? May sound dumb but it the fuel on, on reserve? Does it have an air filter? can you give us a video of it running ?

Sorry i realized that i didnt answer all the questions...he said it hadnt been sitting and that he had riden it this summer....it is starting cold and no i didnt ride it home...like i said in previuos post im sure atleast one carb is definitely dirty, i do have gas and its isnt on reserve...not sure how clean tank is....im not feeling so anxious anymore i realized the first thing i need to do is the maintenances and adjustments and get her running tip top and then everything else will fall in to place but seeing that potential leak there im not sure if i should just start taking engine apart to find cause or if i should figure out how to get compressoin done so i know if i will have to rebuild engine or not..any way looking forward to some good advice

Welcome to the forum, prepare to be educated and entertained.  I too have '77 550 which is now running fine because of this site and all the fine folks.   Cleaning carbs is not difficult if you take enough time to be very careful and learn first what the parts are and how to label them.  It sounds like you might need to clean them to get the bike running well.  Don't be too quick to run out and buy rebuild kits, I've gotten three engines to run well and the only parts I had to buy were a few o-rings, spark plugs, and a set of idle jets I ruined, because I acted first, and read the forum later.

Oh...and take pictures so you know what it looked like "before".  That's easier than asking for a picture to see where "that thing" is supposed to be.  (don't ask how I know this)

And by all means, have fun...it's supposed to be a fun hobby.

Are you sure oil and not gas is leaking grime the carb?
