500T triple tree on a 550?
« on: September 03, 2011, 02:28:21 PM »
i wanna run 1" bars on my '76 cb550.  Any issues with using a 500T triple tree top on my 550?  this way i can get 1" dogbones and run the 1" bars.  didn't know if there were any issues.  they are both 35mm but i don't know if there is any other reason it wouldn't work.
I saw the triple tree swap and it looks like the 550 has less offset, but I saw somewhere else that they all had 0 offset.  so not sure if it would work or not.

The 500T has more offset (distance from steering axis to fork centers) than the 500/550 fours. Fork center to fork center width is the same.

I have a 500T triple tree on a 550K1 and haven't had any issues.  The steering stems appear to be the same; I used an All Balls tapered bearing kit and it dropped right in.  The mount for the brake junction is a little different but the junction block will bolt right on.  You'll lose the steering lock, if that matters, and the 500T top clamp has a mount for the ignition lock which you may or may not need.  I cut it off and smoothed it out since the stock ignition lock for the K1 is under the tank.  I don't know if the stock headlight ears will work because I omitted them and went with aluminum ears.  And the instrument mounts are different.

Good Luck,

Because of the different offset the steering geometry will be much different.
