« on: September 03, 2011, 05:59:57 PM »
Tach stopped spinning.

Took of the cable and a little metal tab fell out and the tach spinner from the engine is almost flush. what is this called and how do I change it?

How easy is this to pull out and replace? Better going tachless for a while?

not too bad i would say... is the tach cable shot? or is it definatly the actual tach gear.... you would have to buy also a new valve cover gasket... dunno about the availability of the gear... but you pull the valve cover, flip it over and it should be a fairly easy replacement

The end of the gear is broken . You should see two tabs at the end of it with a slot in the middle that the tab on the end of the tach cable fits into. The gear comes out easy once the cover is off the top of the engine . If you do replace the gear check the cable and tach for any kind of binding before you start it again .

If you can get a grip on what's left of the drive gear shaft you should be able to just pull it out.  The only thing holding it in place right now is the o-ring.  Here's a picture of mine:

It looks like the outer part of the unit and the tab on the gear shaft are both broken.  According to Motogrid, the housing is still available from Honda but the gear shaft isn't.  Looks like you'll have to source a used one.

Good Luck,

Ive got another one. Your saying I can just yank on the broken piece (attached to the top end) and it should come out?
