Finding an exhaust
« on: September 03, 2011, 06:45:51 AM »
So it appears there is a decent selection of exhausts out there for a CB750 K6. What I really want is something QUIET. I know, not usually requested, but whatever. I want a nice mellow sound, and not much bite. If it ends up "loud", I want it to sound like a racer, not like the chopper it sounds like now.

So yea, what exhaust could fit my requirements? I can't find many videos that I like the sound of that list what type exhaust it is, so I figured I'd ask the guy's who would know!

Are you rich or comfortably well off ? Can't beat the stock 4-4 HM341's if you want quiet.

Mm, actually definitely the opposite end of the spectrum... Starving college student who can't buy his books because I bought a motorcycle...

So yea. Would cycle-x's 4-1 ($229) exhaust be quiet(ish) w/ baffles and a glass pak if they have them?

Get a set of mac 4-2's and install a set of better mufflers on them. Some work will definitely be needed.

the cycle-x exhausts, the mac's (stock), and kerkers are all louder than stock.

I'm curous- can anything be done to an off the shelf Mac 4 into 1 to make it quieter? I also miss the mellow tone of my old stock 4 into 4.

I think what I'm going to do is get the cheap(est) MAC exhaust, the 4-1 black, and put a glass pack. That oughta be decently "quiet" right? At least a little more subdued at idle. Anyone got experience with that?

I just bought a MAC muffler that looks just like an old Kerker Megaphone. It was so quiet I took the baffle out and put in a Kerker cone without the baffle I mounted this muffler to my Kerker header that I got years ago on E bay for $50. $150 for muffler from Dennis Kirk + $50 for used Kerker header = cheap exhaust that looks and sounds great!!

Baffled headers are real damn quiet. A single glasspack on a 4-1 (think cherrybomb style) will not do too much. It will remove some of the rasp, but that's about.

A 4-2 is nice in that regard, as the pair of mufflers can be a little less restrictive and you'll get a good sound.

Hmm, duly noted. Has anyone got a video of what the MAC exhaust sounds like?

Cycle-x also has a supersport slip-on that they say is super-quiet, I may look into that.

Has anyone had any experience contacting Cycle-x? I would like to get in touch and see if I could get some advice from them, about a good, inexpensive combination of headers/mufflers, and what they would sound like, since they should know.

if your head pipes are not shot and on a k6 I doubt it cut them apart at the mufflers so they are as long as possible then loosen them at the heads so they will move

move the pipes around till two of them line up together on each side

I had to swap the two inside piped side to side to get them to line up together

once you have two pairs together on each side tighten the header bolts back down

weld on a car resonator not a glass pack they look like glass packs but have 7 baffles each in them

after the resonator is welded to the pair of pipes you take a 2 inch washer and weld it in the end of the resonator

then you take a 7/8" drill bit  or step drill bit and cut the hole in the washer bigger

this will result in a quiet deep rumble sound that is not restrictive

if you need more restriction in the exhaust so you don't have to rejet then leave the whole in the washer smaller

paint the entire header system and resonators black using wood stove paint you can find at TSC or farm and fleet

I bought a MAC 4 into 1 black header from dennis kirk. It's a cheap pipe, but it works. You can see in the video, already the paint on the header flaking off and some rust from riding in 2 rain storms in 2 years of owning it.

Here's a video to compare sound (quality kinda sucks).

Mind you I've done a lot of work to my bike too. It's not stock.

MVI_2263.AVI

I also should mention, it allows you to change the oil filter and let's you use your rear foot peg for a passenger.

I do like that. I think with the quiet supersport header on cycle-x's page, that could be promising. I like the supersport sound, but I also like quiet. I don't want my classic motorcycle to sound like a mosquito. Or on the other end of the spectrum, which it is now.

But as for Danno's suggestion, I'm selling the exhaust on it now, and its a full exhaust, not header and mufflers.
