SUCCESS!!!  got the head studs removed from the upper case half without breaking any of them!!
I squirted em with SeaFoam DeepCreep and let em sit for an hour, then yanked em with vise grips!!!
now all i gotta do is remove the old black paint and a nice hot bath for the case 1/2s.

I plan to do a cheap (budget) 836 kit on this.  what pistons, etc would be wise to use.   I want a cam with a broader torque curve as well, any ideas?

Thanks all.

BTW-----------this a 74 Cb750 motor

Are vise grips a typical way of removing those?  I'd figure two nuts torqued together on the head nut threads would be a better bet.  I'd be concerned about putting nicks in the head stud shank that could create a stress riser...crack.  I'm kinda conservative about fasteners though.  Of course, if you are replacing them, then no big deal.

FYI, I had remarkable success using O'Reilly brand foaming engine degreaser for removing paint.  It took off the factory stuff!  The engine was pretty warm at the time, but it save me from having to use a paint stripper.  I only put it on to clean off the grease, but it ended up removing the old paint I wanted to strip too.  Lucky me I guess.

I tried the reversed nuts, did not do me any good, gave up and cleaned around them.

I think when do go to replace them, I am going to go get a Craftsman stud puller. Looks a lot better than some of the other ideas.
