VIN numbers dont match title
« on: September 07, 2011, 03:58:57 PM »
After I got home with my CB550, i noticed the VIN on the title are the numbers off the motor, not the frame.  I've seen some posts here that because of the age of the bike VIN numbers didn't match from frame to motor.  I'm wondering if I go through the hassle to get it right or should I just leave it alone and title it in my name the way it is?  Any thoughts?

Remove the vin tag, grind off the numbers on the other side of the neck, restamp the neck with the engine numbers and touch up the paint.  Oops, did I type that out loud?  My bad.

That's the way they titled them in Wisconsin.  Nothing to worry about.

In ma you can put anything you want on the title, and they don't check...  you can change it at anytime.

Maybe the DMV doesn't check but if you get it inspected at a place where they do proper inspections you're effed.

Don't worry about it.. Being a fellow Wisconsonite I had this with my 550F. The vin matched the engine and back then Wi did it this way... Matter of fact, when I went to the DMV, the title wasn't in the system... NO #$%*>>> The lady literally made one on the spot since I had the title signed... My new title still has the engine vin on it and not the frame...And do not worry no reason for inspections here in WI

I concur...did this many times here in WI...all the old bikes are titled via the number on the motor. You will not have a problem. I even had 2 bikes with one incorrect number on the motor. All they had me do was take a pic of the motor number and send it. Got the title no problem.

Honda engine/frame numbers rarely match, they were built at separate plants and bought together on the production line, be very cautious if they do.

In Texas, you will keep getting a nagging letter from Austin telling you something is wrong with the VIN when the engine number is used.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Same goes for Nebraska, makes the Title on the spot. My bike came from WI and the title had the VIN tag number on it, alebit one number was missing! I needed to have something like # 2220158 and my title had #220158.
Lady at the window read it and and said "typo" added a extra 2 on it and away I went with my new title!  ;)

buy a bike w/o a title and its a partd bike in Wi though... Unless you are willing to get a bonded titled for 5 years... pay several hundred for this and after 5 years have it inspected to only then have it decided to have a title issued

I have a friend that just bought a 71 Yamaha 2 stroker with no title In WI.
He called the DMV, got the right form, took it to the cop shop to verify the VIN and have the officer sign the form, and sent in his money to the state. Done deal.

Another thing we can do here in WI is pay the DMV $5 and they will tell you the last registered owner of the bike. You can then contact them (if you can find them) and have them sign a lost title form. Then take it in and they issue a title in that persons name. Then take the title back to them to sign over to you. I have done this with no problem and got the title same day.

I once had a DMV agent tell me to go rub the frame # and engine # with a pencil and tracing paper, and bring it back. When I brought it back the next agent I dealt with said "what is this? I don't need this, all your papers are in order". The point of my story is, they are all pretty much idiots, so wether you have it all correct, or way wrong, it wont matter, or it'll be a hassle depending on how stupid your individual agent is.
