750 ignition coil to a 550
« on: May 10, 2006, 08:55:07 AM »
outside of possible mounting probs.
Can I use  750 ignition coils for my 74 550k instead of the stock 550 coils?
Or will it possibly blow something up?
thanks in advance

I'm thinking of getting new coils for mine.  I don't think there is any benifit of going to the 750 coils, but one upgrade that was done quite often was to get GL1000 coils, that way your can change the damn wires when you need to, and I need to. ;D

yes, assuming you meant a SOHC4 CB750.

sorry for the confusion.  is it monday?  It sure feels like monday to me.

well basically what I was getting at was the "sohc "750's ability to change wires.  my 550 coils are fine but the wires are in bad shape

twotired:  was thr YES for that it is going to blow something up? if so what?

or YES for that  it is o.k.  to make the switch?

The stock CB750s ignition wires are molded into the coils like the CB550 was.  I always thought thery were the same between the two models.

Replaceable ignition wires weren't stock fare until later Honda models after the SOHC4.  These often had electronic ignitions, too, with lower resistance primaries in the corresponding ignition coils.
Yes, these can work.  They will also put greater demands on the stock points and draw more power from the bike's electrical system.
The stock 5 ohm coils draw 2.4 amps of the total going through the main fuse.
3 Ohm coils will draw 4 amps of the total going through the main fuse.
2 Ohm coils will draw 6 amps of the total going through the main fuse.
1 Ohm coils will draw 12 amps of the total going through the main fuse.

If you go with coils with very low primary resistance, you could blow main fuses.  Particulary if the fuse clips are oxidized, causing extra heating.

I could go on.  But, there are too many variables at this point.  Bike?  Specific coils?  Other bikes mods?  Specific goals?

Hope this helps,
