LEDs that don't look crappy?
« on: September 12, 2011, 07:11:09 PM »
So, in the last few years, I've seen tons of older bikes 'upgraded' to LEDs, either with replacement bulbs, or whole fixtures. Thing is, the only time LEDs look good to me, are when you can't see the emmiter. Everything else, and this includes newer factory cars and bikes, look like dogs#!t cheap import toys from the 70s. Are there any setups that don't show a ton of little dots under a lens?

I've seen some newer Cadillacs, I think, that had nicely diffused LED tail lights.  So they are out there, not sure how they're built differently.

LEDs are highly directional.  'tis the nature of the beast.

Those look good, the side-firing LEDs help fill the lens more with light from the reflector, I'm sure.

Im building a pocket in my rear frame loop to take a fitted piece of acrylic which Ill media blast and profile to match the frame loop.  Then on the inside of the loop ill mount LEDs to power the acrylic 'lens/reflector'.  Im hoping for fairly bright and even glow.

Notice that, in the pictures on the SBL site of their lights 'in action', not a single one is taken of the lens that isn't off-axis. There's a reason for this..

Check customdynamics.com They have a ton of different products. I used the Radiantz LED strips on my previous V-ROD for run / turns / brake. It worked great, was super bright, and the tiny surface mount LEDs don't give you the dots you are referring too. They will look like one continuous light when on.

The other trick with LEDs is that the bulb color needs to match the lens color.

Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
