Gerex Electronic Ignition: Anyone familiar?
« on: September 09, 2011, 08:23:04 PM »
Picked this up today for cheap.

I can't find much info. about it on the interwebs. I was told it is
from the seventies and fits Honda Fours (indicated on the original
box). I thought it may have value to someone. Or did I just buy a
fancy doorstop?

Oh my! :o Major score! ;D I've got one; it was installed on my bike when I bought it in '79. Excellent multi-spark ignition system. Oops, I meant to say yeah, it's a doorstop... send it to me and I will reimburse you for the postage. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I have one that is totally identical to that. NOS box and all! Can't say that I know much about it yet as I haven't installed it nor looked into it yet.

I've got a copy of the installation instructions somewhere that I downloaded off the internet, most likely from a link on Axl's site. Gerry had a sense of humor... ;)

I've got one here that I bought for my Suzuki GS1000S, a friend in the US bought an RC Engineering modified GS with the Gerex fitted as part of the hop up, I bought him a Dyna S and he sent me the Gerex, I thought that was a fair trade, I know the gerex was very expensive "back in the day". Good pickup mate! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I wish.  ;)
I found a guy locally selling some motorcycle parts via a classified ad. When I arrived, I discovered he had a four car garage and a 10,000 square foot warehouse full of bikes and parts. I told him what bikes I had and he just started pulling parts he knew he had. Thus, the Gerek ignition and the Mac exhaust I have listed in the classifieds currently. He certainly didn't give them away but his prices were fair enough to where I figured I could make a quick (modest) profit.
I was able to locate installation instructions for the Gerex online.
Thanks for the replies! I guess I'll throw it up on the Bay and see what the market will pay.

Bummer, I missed it by 5 bucks! Oh well, I've got another used Gerex here, I'll have to install it instead. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks for your interest, Terry. To be honest, I'm quite surprised with how much it sold for.

No worries mate, I'm glad you got some decent money for it. Back in the day they were really expensive (that's what killed them off, Dyna's were a quarter of the price) but I've heard that they were really, really good, so I'm hoping the one I've got here for a Suzuki GS1000 will work on my 750. I might have to modify my rotor, but the kit I've got is all there including the Gerex coils, so I either sell it and by a Dyna 2000, or I have a play with it. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hey Terry, what is the primary/secondary resistance on the Gerex coils?

G'Day Mate, I'll double check for you tomorrow, but from memory, they don't have any markings on them at all? They just look like a couple of aluminum bodied car coils? I'll snap a pic for you after work. Cheers, Terry. ;D
