Putting CB550K motor in newer motorcycle??
« on: September 10, 2011, 11:48:04 AM »
Has anyone fit a CB550 motor in a newer bike?
My 550 has 3500 original miles, and I was thinking technology has evolved so much.
Maybe I could by a CBR with a blown engine and fit this baby in there?
on my third CB550k  Bought brand new 1978,  used 1977, used 1978 current bike  4635 original miles now

Well you can fit anything in anything with enough effort.  :o Problem with alot of modern sport bikes is the frame is aluminum, so you have to come up with some way to mount the engine in an aluminum frame. You can't just go cutting and rewelding...or at least not as easily as you can with steel. Also on most of these bikes the engine is part of the frame, there is no traditional 'cradle' to insert the engine into like cruisers have. Then even if you solve all those issues you have to get the front/rear sprockets lined up. If it ain't close then you have to start thinking about some kind of jack-shaft.

My opinion is a real buzz kill.  It is not worth the time of effort.  Now the opposite of running a 100hp motor in a CB frame tempts me a bit.  But yet again I think its cooler in theory than in practicality.  With enough time and money you can do just about anything.  It sounds like you are interested from a cost standpoint.  I can tell you it will be far cheaper to just buy a newer bike with semi-low miles than it will be to transplant a 550 motor into a new bike frame.

You made me think about it after I cheered knowing someone else would like to know what these control freaks are up to.

What bothers them is they sat up late at night, their breast full of wonder and estrogen, unable to sleep, dreaming about their lovely darling and all her glory... and next thing you know someone else doesn't share their emotional deluge and their reaction is they must spread their mind museum as far as they possibly can, taking over as much of the real world as possible.

or buy a cb550 frame and dump it in it we have lots of them up here in michigan some are complete rollers just need a motor I doubt it would cost much more than 300 dollars but I would have to ask
