Your first mistake was to trust the carrier to take your mail from your house. No matter how unimportant a piece of mail is, you should always drop it in a mail box specifically for pickup, or at the Post Office. The Postal Service is to blame, but you'll never hear that from them. Yes, email and UPS/FedEx have put the hurtin' on them, but they are not blameless. For about 20 years, they have been going towards a part time work force, so the don't have to offer benefits, putting the "grunt" into disgruntled. Your daily carrier couldn't care less if he/she tried.
That being said, the USPS is still the best postal service in the world. AND the cheapest. What we pay 43cents(?) for, in other countries are charged dollars and delivery isn't as fast as ours. Recent developments will endanger the Postal Service, and I fear it may be the end. So far, the Post Office has been self sufficient, not taking a single cent from the government, but I don't think that will last either.
