USPS -What a joke!
« on: September 10, 2011, 01:41:06 PM »
In my experience, the US Postal Service has been pretty shaky for years, but at this point, I think they should quit pretending to actually deliver mail. I have had five important pieces of mail just go missing after having been picked up from my mail box. Two of them had checks in them and two of the others were documents that I had had to take to a Notary Public to witness my signature on them. Three of the five were important documents to the City & County regarding property taxes. I know the Internet has taken a lot of business away from them but there are still a lot of things that simply have to go by mail. I'm about afraid to mail anything anymore.

Ouch.  Sounds painful!

Knock-on-wood, but AFAIK, I've never once had a piece of mail go missing from USPS.  Never had a bill not get paid, never had an invoice not show up, and I KNOW I've never missed a single piece of junk mail...  :D

Seems to me the common denominator there is your letter carrier....

Your first mistake was to trust the carrier to take your mail from your house.  No matter how unimportant a piece of mail is, you should always drop it in a mail box specifically for pickup, or at the Post Office.  The Postal Service is to blame, but you'll never hear that from them.  Yes, email and UPS/FedEx have put the hurtin' on them, but they are not blameless.  For about 20 years, they have been going towards a part time work force, so the don't have to offer benefits, putting the "grunt" into disgruntled.  Your daily carrier couldn't care less if he/she tried.

That being said, the USPS is still the best postal service in the world.  AND the cheapest.  What we pay 43cents(?) for, in other countries are charged dollars and delivery isn't as fast as ours.  Recent developments will endanger the Postal Service, and I fear it may be the end.  So far, the Post Office has been self sufficient, not taking a single cent from the government, but I don't think that will last either.

You sure someone isn't stealing your mail- someone besides your mail carrier?
With that kind of frequency of getting things lost it sound like some jackass is helping themselves to you mailbox. You need to issue a complaint to the postmaster in your city, this warrants an investigation.

had the same experience a few years back,
3 items I sold on ebay went missing at a usps processing center,
all in 2 weeks.
had to return $ to buyers and ate the shipping costs.  >:(

Never got the parts back either.

Now I use Fedex for all large packages, but still use USPS for all
small stuff. They are cheaper and I have not had a problem since.

peace,

I would still rank the USPS as a pretty good service. We did, recently, feel we were not receiving all mail, a few bills not showing up. Then I received a few pieces belonging to other neighbors. I just walked them to the proper house. You would think if others had received our mail, they would do the same. Unfortunately, across from us, one house number off, is the neighborhood SOB who hates everyone. I went to the post office, asked for a supervisor and explained the problem. Seems to have been resolved, bad sorting I think, maybe a new carrier?? I routinely put mail in the box for pick-up, never had a problem with that in 40+ years. [knocks on wood]
